ANIMAL HOUSE is the film that launched National Lampoon as a comedy powerhouse. Developed by the editors at the Harvard Lampoon, the film is a collection of true-life experiences and memories with a great deal of embellishment. Nothing is sacred in this film, in which every gesture, phrase, and song became de rigueur in fraternity houses nationwide after its release. Decadence, debauchery, and delinquency prevail at Delta House, the scourge of the fraternity system at Faber College in 1962. In an effort to rid himself of the troublesome brothers, Dean Wormer (John Vernon) hatches a plan in cahoots with the brown-nosing Greg Marmalard (James Daughton) of rival fraternity Omega to have the Deltas kicked off campus. Unfortunately for them, the determination and drive of the Deltas is more than anyone counted on. In their last stand against the uptight dean, the antiheroes of Delta drink, smoke, romp, frolic, and dance--going out with a bang. This outrageous, much-loved comedy classic features the first major film role of the late, great John Belushi as John "Bluto" Blutarsky, the hard-partying, beer-guzzling champion of Delta house.

***MINIMAL SPOILERS*** The low budget, set in Faber College, PA, 1962, is where this classic comedy takes place. The two Frat Houses, the Omegas versus the Deltas. The Omegas are the stuffy, preppy, uppity elite rich kids that think that their bodies do not emanate certain smells. The Deltas are expert party animals that can smell alcohol a mile away. The original writers of National Lampoon wrote this script, the usual "shopped it all over Tinsletown" and nobody wanted it, is true. The ONLY way Director John Landis convinced Universal Studios to green light this movie was to cast a "somebody"; that somebody was Donald Sutherland, and who probably had a bigger part had Universal had their way. At the time, other than Sutherland, the only "name" was John Belushi. John Vernon plays the stern, but somewhat inept Dean Wormer, who claims he got inspiration of that role by watching Richard M. Nixon on TV. The bottom line is that this movie touches all the edges of laughable, prank-filled comedies that are not done anymore, at least not done WELL anymore, and no extreme violence harms anyone for long( other than the horse who has a heart attack in the Dean's Office). This film was voted to be saved via the National Film Registry.

To view w/my teens that miss out on classic fun movies.
I like the fact that it shows what some of us that like to have fun in life might be faced with from other people and what we may have to do about it in a non violent way, but in the way of humor and dilegence. This movie is a Classic to me and a way to show my kids that you can succeed and still have fun, just do'nt get expelled and have horrible grades as they did and at the same time do'nt be a nose in the air to others that you're no better than.I like the fact that it shows what some of us that like to have fun in life might be faced with from other people and what we may have to do about it in a non violent way, but in the way of humor and dilegence. Widescreen = Top and bottom of picture frame was deleted
Luckily I have older digital recordings, because the DVD version deletes 20% of the picture to make it "Widescreen" ( about 10% chopped off top AND bottom). It should be should be a crime to hack such a great movie. I don't know if there are any older DVD's available that have the original, non-chopped picture, but it might be worth a try to look for one before buying this version.

Watch it with someone who hasn't seen it.
This is great fun. My 20 year old daughter had never seen it and we watched it together. She laughed so hard I thought she was gonna hurt herself. Priceless. I highly recomment this. When compaired with virtually all the current batch of "comedies" this puts them all to shame. Watch it with someone who hasn't seen it. It will be a treat...like seeing it again for the first time!
