Bridgman the Great
George Bridgman was at one time the most well-known and respected authority on anatomy for artists. He taught at Art Students League in NYC for a long time and he issue at least three books on anatomy for artists, that were standard textbooks for art students at the time. Plus, as I just discovered, he issue this book on the draped figure, showing the standard methods for drawing or painting drapery (aka, clothing) as it is impacted by the human form. I was very surprised and pleased to discover this book. It shows the methods used by Renaissance painters when they went from the nude to the clothed figure. He was himself an amazing draftsman of the human body with all the skills of a Renaissance artist. His book on the anatomy of the human hand is unparalleled. The hand is by far the most ... The hand is by far the most difficult to master due to its intricacy and range of movement. Most artists find a formula and stick to it, even when the formula doesn't look quite so human. Bridgman knew the anatomy and possible movements of the human hand probably better than any artist in history. Those he draws never appear formulaic. I've given four stars because Bridgman did have one weakness, and that was the fact he was not much of a writer. So lots of diagrams with very little text is typical of him.

This is a great artists guide for "classic" draping.
I purchased Drawing the Draped Figure to help me in drawing the folds in my pictures of saints. I had seen a reference to this book, and a picture from it, on a how-to video online. I love the style of the examples drawn in this book and found them especially helpful to me, in that they are classic and perfectly fit the style of a 13th century saints. A bit embarrassed to mention, I carried this book with me so much I finally left it somewhere and have already purchased another to replace it. I find it to be as important as a writer's dictionary. I consider it the best I have found for wrinkle/draping examples. I wish it were longer than 64 pages, I could use yet more examples.
