Steinbeck the biologist
As a longtime Steinbeck fan I was eager to dive into this book. I was not disappointed; it is different than any of his other writings. The influence of his friend Ed Ricketts is evident here. I read this book while vacationing in Baja Mexico; it added flavor to see the locales Steinbeck referred to decades later. The story of the preparations for the voyage had me laughing out loud. The only reason that I did not give the book a 5 rating was due to the sometimes lengthy descriptions of the sealife that mingle with the narrative. I understand that the cataloging of the marine biology was the reason for the trip, but the mingling of Latin names with the human adventure makes the story a little choppy sometimes. If you have read Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" you will know ... As a longtime Steinbeck fan I was eager to dive into this book.
