TARNATION is a wondrous achievement, a personal essay that miraculously balances despair and tragedy with an overriding air of hopefulness. Raised by a schizophrenic mother and abusive foster parents in and around Houston, Texas, Jonathan Caouette escaped from his bleak surroundings by hiding behind a video camera. Since he was eleven, Jonathan obsessively documented himself and those around him, resulting in a stockpile of videotapes that appeared to have no certain purpose. Around this time, he made another dramatic discovery: he was gay. Inspired by underground horror films, musical theatre, and other forms of pop culture, Jonathan knew that he one day wanted to be a performer, and so, in his early twenties, he moved to New York City, where he acted in student films and found stability in the form of his loving boyfriend, David. When he discovered Apple's easy-to-use iMovie editing software, Jonathan began the arduous process of assembling the endless footage of his past. The result is an autobiographical documentary that defies description, a heart-wrenching, devastating testament to personal human spirit. Even after all that his mother put him through, Caouette heroically stands behind her, which gives TARNATION its unwavering soul and makes it must-see viewing for everyone.

This one really hit a chord with me. Loved the documentary style and the emotions that poured out of this film. It really moved me and made me see his point of view. THis is a bit of a taboo subject that most people rather not talk about. This movie is Highly Recommended! Enjoy!~~~~~~

Thrilling, hard to find doc
This movie is definitely not for everyone: my ex hated it, for example. But, this guy gives hope to everyone without a filmmaking degree (or any sorta experience for that matter), money, or equipment - with only a desire to tell a story & the sheer perseverance to make it happen. Very moving, not always easy to watch, a travelogue thru the most painful parts of a fellow human's childhood... nevertheless, I feel like a better person after coming thru it.This movie is definitely not for everyone: my ex hated it, for example. But, this guy gives hope to everyone without a filmmaking degree (or any sorta experience for that matter), money, or equipment - with only a desire to tell a story & the sheer perseverance to make it happen. Very moving, not always easy to watch, a travelogue thru the most painful parts of a fellow human's childhood... nevertheless, I feel like a better person after coming thru it.

Beautiful film
This film leaves you feeling so much. Hurt, empathy, fear, beauty, nostalgia...it’s so relatable for me. Beautifully done. The love for his mother is amazing. The records he kept are impressive to say the least. And I’m so honored to be Jonathan’s friend. Amazing visionary of a man.

An incredible documentary about schizophrenia!! See it!
This movie is a real life look inside a family struggling with the effects of schizophrenia. The filmmaker, Jonathan, does a wonderful job of chronicling his mother's battle with mental illness through home videos. Understand this isn't acting-these are actual home videos of the family. You're heart will break, you will laugh, you will cry, and most of all you will have a new found sense of compassion for those who society label "crazy."This movie is a real life look inside a family struggling with the effects of schizophrenia. The filmmaker, Jonathan, does a wonderful job of chronicling his mother's battle with mental illness through home videos. Understand this isn't acting-these are actual home videos of the family. You're heart will break, you will laugh, you will cry, and most of all you will have a new found sense of compassion for those who society label "crazy."

TARNATION- FITS THE SCENE OF TEXAS ANACRONISM
REAL INTENSE BIOGRAPHY OF GROWING UP IN A MORE DISFUNCTIONAL FAMILY THAN THE NORM. I DIDNT ENJOY THE PSYCADEIC TRANSITIONS BUT I MUST ADMIT THEY FIT THE THEME-LOVE CAN CONCOUR ALL.
