A Great Saturday Morning Serial.
My first introduction to Flash Gordon was the weekday afternoon runs of the Buster Crabbe serials. Space opera serials provided action and a contineous storyline. It was a young boy's dream. Later I found the comics and compilations of the newspaper strips. Fabulous vistas of strange new worlds were filled with wonderfully bold art. When The New Adventures of Flash Gordon appeared I saw the best of both. It had the type of stories used in the older serials and the artwork style of the strips. Spaceships soared once again to explore a new world. Strange creatures feed off even stranger plants. Characters old and new followed type and interacted very well. Thun's raw emotion and Baron's intrigue played off Voltan's uberous. Even though Filmation's generous use of stock footage got tedious ... Even the short second season with its less then fabulous stories, could not deminise the wonderful first season. Packaging Great artwork inpired by the series, was done in a process that makes you think of animation cells. Beautiful images in a clean format that provided clear information. Extras A mix of stock history of Filmation mixed with some Flash Gordon specific interveiws, leed the the extras. Insights in to the series and how shows are budgeted added more respect to the people who produced it Production material on the DVD ROM section draws the fan even further into the production aspects. Art Cards by Gene Ha and Frank Cho were a wonderful tribute to the show. The additional episode of Defenders of the Earth was not at the level of Flash Gordon, but for a fan relatively enjoyable.

DVD would have been great if you bought it when it first came out, too expensive to just see episode 15 and 16.
First season is the best, ends around episode 16. Episodes 17 - 24 are each about 12 minutes long and are plagued by a new character; a pink dragon. Small children may like the dragon character but true fans of Flash Gordon not so much. You can buy the first season cheaper but the problem is that it only has episodes 1-14, episode 15 and 16 continue the story and are not included in the cheaper set.First season is the best, ends around episode 16. total thrills with flash gordon.
WOW! What can i say. This another one of those filmation cartoons i saw in my beloved childhood along with tarzan, star trek, and groovy ghoulies. It is remarkably close to the original buster crabbe series of the 1930's as far as storyline is concerned. I think its creator alex ross would be proud. The animation is beautiful, rich in color, very similar to the likes of heman. The stories do drag on just slightly but if you were a young child in the late 70's early eighties and you watched this show then you know just how good the over all quality and entertainment value is. This is pure eye candy. One thing about this flash gordon set is for some reason there are 2 versions. A 14 episode set and a four disc complete 24 episode set. The second season starting with episode 17 actually ... WOW! What can i say. Still Holds up
I remember the original run of The New Adventures of Flash Gordon. I was in my early teens and pretty jaded about Saturday mornings. THere were only a few bright spots: Thundarr the Barbarian and this series. I've since seen both the abysmal 80's movie and the recent reimagining of Flash on the SciFi channel, but to me neither of these captures the orignal cartoon strip as well as this series does, even down to Dale Arden being drawn with the typical 'damsel in distress' eyes seen in the old strips. It doesn't hurt that the animation is, for it's day and genre, top-notch, too. True, some stuff gets re-used several times, but heck, they had to keep costs down somehow. Actually, most Saturday morning cartoons re-used 'stock' animation. It's simply more obvious here because of the high ... I remember the original run of The New Adventures of Flash Gordon. Because it holds up, and, trust me, all too many Saturday morning cartoons don't. But Flash is just as good, just as entertaining now as it was then.

The New Adventures of Flash Gordon is good.
The New Adventures of Flash Gordon is better than I expected it to be. While I think the animation suffers from a low budget, I think the show makes up for it in the writing. The episodes are not very fast paced, but I was surprised to discover that there is a coherent continuity. The DVD menus are simple and easy to navigate. This is a good purchase for fans of Flash Gordon, Space Opera pulp, or remember the show fondly. If you want high end animation, this is not the series for you.The New Adventures of Flash Gordon is better than I expected it to be.
