A Classic In My Collection. Still One of My Favorites
Even after almost 30 years, this album stands on its own. We are not quite quite sure what inspired Elton to produce such a wonderful album. All that I can think after looking back on this album is that he knows how to paint the words in a song. The only hit that ever got any play in the United States from this album was Someone Saved My Life Tonight, but I can't even remember the last time that I ever just listened to one song from this Album. A great SACD of Elton's rock and roll swan song
The last big hurrah for Elton before Disney and Las Vegas turned him into a parody of himself. 1976 Elton's popularity peaked. It had been a furiously fast rise to the top. Full of unseen pitfalls and in the end Elton was suicidal during this period...the height of success. The cover says it all. All sorts of foul creatures prop up the "captain"on his ride to Babel while the "cowboy" was safe in his sphere with his wife, idyllic rural life...still the demons lurk just outside his bubble. It is autobiographical in a '70's way. It sounds like a product of its time as much, if not more so, than any album he had made to date. Disco and posh, moviesque string parts appeared where Paul Buckmaster had been eclectic enough to Keep Elton moving forward, innocent yet dark. Rocking but melodious ... The band is bigger, Ray cooper is heard throughout-not a bad thing but not the ideal direction in 1976. Gus Dudgeon has filled every space with sound. This approach detracts from the autobiographical nature of the material. It's as if you expect the Bee Gee's to pop up as backing vocalists on certain tunes."Meal Ticket" is one of those. Davey's distorted guitar scale-climb at the beginning of the phrased can't cover the Disco sound. The strings help none. This album has aged. Still, it is Elton's last real rock album. It is not as if he didn't want to after "Captain Fantastic", it was as if he forgot how. "...I wrote such childish words for you. and that's OK; for treasure, children always seem to find....." "Curtains", last song on album.

Elton at the top of his career
I've been going back in my collection and acquiring the studio albums of classic rock artists that I grew up with and only had the greatest hits cd's of. After purchasing this disk I realized that there just isn't a bad song on this disk. In fact, it rocks! This was Elton at the height of his career, and in my opinion this is in the top 5 of his albums w/ Bernie Taupan penning the lyrics. I am very satisfied with this in my collection. Great 5.1 Surround SACD
If you're like me and you like 5.1 Surround mixes this, as well as ALL of the Elton John Surround mixes, is among the best i've ever heard. If you like the original record you'll LOVE this version which "surrounds" you in layers of acoustic guitars, keyboards and vocals. You'll hear things you never heard before on this record.

Fantastic, Captain!
Ultimate sound definition for all instruments, sometimes revealing overdubs that are sort of buried in the stereo mix. A MUST HAVE for any Elton fan!
