  • Horatio Hornblower complete 8 DVD set

The Horatio Hornblower series from A&E consists of eight titles that chronologically tell a story from the first day of a young man at sea (no sea legs) to his commission of his own ship. The acting/camera work/locations were all superb. In complete honesty I must state that there were a few times when the story didn't move as quickly as I might have liked, but never to the point that it was bothersome. Typically as the episode I was watching ended, I was ready to put the next episode on, if time would allow. Similar to how I watched Band of Brothers, if that helps. Different time period, but similar in that you get to know several of the characters and they come and go in the various stories as you might expect under the circumstances. As noted by some other reviewers, Hornblower ...

  • Brilliant Series.

This is a fantastically produced and acted series based on the C.S. Forester classics, set in the Napoleonic Wars period. Filmed in the Crimea, it is exquisitely made with believable sets and tall ships, and brilliant performances by Ioan Gruffudd (his first major role), Robert Lyndsey, Paul McCann and a host of others. If you love Alexander Kent (Richard Bolitho), Patrick O'Brian (Jack Aubrey - i.e. Master & Commander) or Dudley Pope (Ramage), then these will be a treat. There is talk of a third series... hopefully it's more than just a rumor!

  • ...well-written and well-acted.

This series of British films are both well-written and well-acted. Anyone with even a passing interest in the era of nineteenth-century wooden sailing ships or in the Napoleonic Wars in particular will thoroughly enjoy every movie in this series. There's plenty of action, drama, political intrigue, et cetera. If you enjoy historical accuracy in period pieces, you will find it in these films. Although the eponymous Hornblower is a fictional character, the films' other principle character, Admiral Sir Edward Pellew, was a real naval hero of the Napoleonic Wars, a contemporary of and very nearly on par with Lord Nelson. I'm not usually very interested in DVD extras, but I found the extras in this set to be very interesting indeed. They offer some historical background on the era and the ...

  • Not a Collector's Edition Per Se....

I had been looking for a well priced DVD edition of the full Horatio Hornblower series from A&E, and I remember back in the day on VHS it being offered at 75.99 for the set! I looked for it on a whim after seeing one of the movies at the library, and found this "Collector's Edition" for 20 dollars less than the others and free shipping. Upon recieving it I realized it was a strange version, with Mandarin subtitles you cannot turn off and a badly translated story blurb on the back of the box "Hornblower is best and greatest of all time sea adventurer from Old England". LOL. Disks came in sleeves labled with marker, but included all eight movies when the box listed only six, and there are noticable glue bubbles under the labels on the box. This edition was truly 'one of a kind', and bootleg ...

  • Horatio Hornblower Series

I really like this series of the adventures of horatio hornblower a navy seaman in the British Navy who moves up the ranks amid his adventures fighting the French during the Napoleanic wars and French Revolution. there are lots of battle scenes on the water with sailing ships and it is very fun viewing. it is entertaining to watch for adults as it is based on the novelist H M Forrester brilliant work if I remember correctly. it is also clean viewing for children as well and there are lessons kids can learn from watching Horatio handle himself , the acting is superb and the production value is high. really entertaining dvd's here for anyone's library and a nice escape without the gratuitous sex and violence and demoralizing scenes in a lot of movies today. you really cant go wrong here...
