À propos de ce produit

Product Information

The musical biopic of jazz great Red Nichols features a healthy dose of melodrama along with the melodies. As the famed Dixieland cornetist, he runs into opposition to his sound, but breaks through to success. He marries a warm, patient woman (Bel Geddes) and even finds time to raise a family. Then tragedy strikes when their daughter contracts polio. The jazzman puts down his horn to stand by her. Among the musical cameos is a hot turn by Armstrong in a duet with Kaye.

  • One of my favorite movies !

This is one of those "by chance" movies I watched while staying with my wife in the hospital after the birth of our first child. One of the channels was running a Danny Kaye mar-a-thon and i sat and watched every minute of it ! Butof all the films I think this one was my favorite of his work mostly because it is jammed packed with lot of great music and stars ! Gleen miller, bennny goodman, and bob crosby (bings brother) just to name a few ! Great movie to have in your family collection..It speaks volumes about how loving your family and following dream can find a place together in life. My 16 year old son who thinks he the coolest thing to hit this earth since elvis even sat through the whole thing (he plays trumpet in the high school band) and afterwards I even got a "good movie choice ...

  • Great movie with peppy music and charming charactors

Good old time movie with Louis Armstrong looking pretty young and Danny Kaye seeming to play a pretty swinging trumpet. This was a favorite movie of my two boys who both played the trumpet through their school years. It also has a strong moral point when Kaye is forced to support his ailing polio stricken daughter by doing grunt labor rather than leading his new five pennies band.

  • A ragtime jazz lover's dream!

This is one of my favorite movies and one of Danny Kaye's best performances as Loring (Red) Nichols. It is base on the true story of Mr. Nichols life and popularity in the '20's and '30's music era. The songs (many of them written by Kaye's wife, Sylvia Fine) is delightful and heartwarming. Appearances by Louis Armstrong add so much to story and his character is as lovable on film as he was in real life. Barbara Bel Geddes seems almost unchanged from her "Dallas" days as the Ewing family matriarch and gives a touching performance portraying Nichol's wife. I highly recommend "The Five Pennies" to anyone who loves tight, harmonizing vocals, ragtime jazz and or just a "feel good" movie. It is well worth the money and a film you will enjoy again and again.

  • Corny But Charming

"The Five Pennies" is a sanitized telling of the story of Red Nichols. This corny film is full of cliches and predictable turns of plot, yet so charming and engaging that all is forgiven. Danny Kaye demonstrates his ability as a serious actor (with a smattering of his characteristic comedic shtick) and talent as a singer. This is a thoroughly enjoyable movie - but only if you're able to suspend judgment and disbelief of all the hokey 1950s- style conventions used.

  • A movie for everyone!

I have always loved this movie! I have owned it many times and have given them to family and friends. It is a wonderful story about how some of the biggest names in big bands got their start AND it has Danny Kaye and Satchmo!!! Oh, it has Bings brother in it too!! lol Seriously, it is a wonderful movie with great music!!
