Dead or Alive was an instant hit on the PlayStation but the game never made it to the U.S. for the Saturn. This time around Sega fans get to experience Dead or Alive 2 first as the game makes its first U.S. appearance on the Dreamcast. Thanks to the game being originally developed for the Dreamcast-friendly Naomi arcade board, Tecmo had no problem keeping the game "arcade perfect." Dead or Alive 2 runs at 60 frames per second during every fighting sequence. However, the frame rate does drop to 30fps during cinematic sequences that take place between battles in Story mode. This is a result of the game using two different game engines, one for the game itself and one for the cinematic sequences. Dead or Alive 2 features semi-realistic fighting much in the same way as Virtua Fighter 3tb. You won't find weapons or fireballs here, just hand-to-hand combat. Modes of play include Story, Time Attack, Survival, Team Battle, Sparring, Versus, and Tag Battle. For fans of the fighting genre most of the modes should be self-explanatory. Story mode is where one player takes one of the selectable characters through battles against six of the characters until they reach the final boss and win the game. Time Attack allows users to see how fast they can complete each fight. Survival pits fighters against one character after another to see how many in a row they can defeat without losing. Power-ups can be obtained in Survival mode when an enemy is knocked out or when a follow-up is launched on a downed opponent. Team Battle has gameplayers choose a team of fighters to fight another group of fighters with. The objective is to defeat each enemy fighter before each member of your team is defeated. Sparring is a practice mode where gamers can learn the moves of each character. Versus is a standard one-on-one fight against the computer or a friend. Tag Battle is a mode that is not found in the original arcade version of Dead or Alive 2. This mode can be played in a variety of ways. One is for a single-player to control two characters and go against two computer-controlled or human-controlled characters. Another is for two players to each control one character on the same team and to go against two computer-controlled opponents. A third option is for two players to each control one pair of fighters. The fourth is for two players to be on one team and for a third player to control the second team. Finally, the fifth way to play is for four players to pair off in teams of two with each player controlling one character. When tagging in and out players will be able to perform combinations together for added damage to their opponent. At the start of the game there are a total of 12 characters featured and a final boss that will not be unveiled until you reach the end of the game in Story mode. There is Ryu Hayabusa, a martial artist who first appeared in the Tecmo classic Ninja Gaiden; Helena, a french opera singer; and Bass, a fighter who looks a lot like wrestler Hulk Hogan. Some of the others include: Leon, Kasumi, Ayane, Jann-Lee, Zack, Ein, Tina, Lei-Fang, and Gen-Fu. The fighters will do battle in a total of nine different arenas: The City, The Cathedral, The Elevator, The Opera House, The Wind Towers, The Arctic Plains, The Japanese Garden, The Generator Room, and another version of The City. Fighting locations are multi-tiered allowing players to throw each other off of various heights, as well as through some objects such as windows. Locations also feature danger zones, something that appeared in the original Dead or Alive. Danger zones are areas of a location that cause massive damage to a fighter when they are knocked down on top of them.

Good intro to arcade fighting for your dreamcast
Dead or alive 2 is the only tecmo game released for the Dreamcast if I remember correctly. It is an arcade port that is sort of bare bones but provides for a solid fighting experience with a fairly in depth attack, counter, and block dynamic that is quick to pick up but difficult to master. Each character (there is 12 total I think ) has their own signature techniques that are varied enough to provide for a distinct play style but one set of male/female characters seem to be mostly mirrors of each other (the Armstrong's ) . Other then that , the game is pretty worthless as a single player experience. You'll get to the hilarious looking boss in a matter of minutes if you're decent at the game and the game doesn't really translate into English from Japanese very well leaving for a few ... And from there if you're searching for something more then that you'll at least know if that's something you'll want to invest more into with your collection.

Dead or Alive 2
Well I decided to dust off my Dreamcast, and now I wonder why I even bothered. Dead or Alive 2 was good when it came out, but I just can't understand why anyone would choose to play this over Soul Calibur. The combat is easy enough to pick up but seems to lack enough depth for this to be a truly great fighter. Also, unlike the Xbox version, there is so little to this game to keep you from coming back again and again. You have story mode, vs. mode, team battle, tag mode, and survival mode. There is nothing to unlock, which would have added a little replay value, which is much needed in this short game. On the other hand the graphics are really good, even by todays standards, and the fighters move very fluidly. The music is bad, sounding like 80's rock with a little electronic flare, which ... So the question is, is the Dreamcast version of Dead or Alive 2 worth picking up? My answer would be that unless you're a huge fan of fighters and you only own a Dreamcast then it's worth picking up, if not get Soul Calibur, but if you own a PS2 or Xbox and like this game you may as well pick up the later incarnations. Fighters are definitely not my first choice of game to play so I'd hesitate to reccomend DOA2 when there's better fighters out there.

This game plays like a cousin to the Tekken and Virtua Fighter series, as it is a hand to hand fighting game based on real martial arts. There is a punch button, a kick button, a throw button, and a counter button. Stringing together combos feels easy and responsive, but what sets this fighter apart from others are the counter attacks, which is key to getting any good at this game. The game also features huge, multi-tierd backgrounds where for instance, you can knock your opponent out of a window, and jump out the window following them to the outside ground where the fight continues. There are 12 selectable characters (half guys, half girls) each with alternate outfits. Aside from ... This game was ported from the Sega Naomi Arcade hardware and runs perfectly on the Sega Dreamcast. The visuals are absolutely gorgeous, the best on the dreamcast beating out even Soul Caliber. The gameplay is top-notch with tight responsive controls, and a well balanced roster of characters and fighting styles. While not as deep as Virtua Fighter, this game takes a more user friendly approach suiting both purists and begginers alike. While not necessarily shallow, there is a simplified control scheme employed here in comparison to other fighters, the gameplay is easy to learn with some depth to mastery. The only gripe I have with this game is the total lack of unlockable content. What you get is the arcade experience brought to your home, which is good, but there isn't much single player replayability aside from the arcade nostalgia. There is a PS2 version of this game which does have unlockable content, but it doesn't look as good, or play as smoothly as this or the arcade version. Overall I give this game a 4 out of 5. If you enjoy fighting games, and own a Sega Dreamcast, then this is the cream of the crop.

A lot of differences
One thing I have noticed is that there are a lot of cool and funny mechanics not in the new ones. Game is fun and feels more fluid than 5
