Broad Overview of Byzantine Coinage
An introductory overview of Byzantine coins. Good line drawings. I can not recommend it for those who wish in-depth knowledge. It does not discuss Scyphates (Cup Coins) to any depth and just briefly talks about the transition from the Roman Imperial coinage to the new denominations of the beginning of the Byzantine era. I especially do not like the introduction of the term "Romaion" to the novice/casual reader. This can be confusing to the new reader and is not found in other texts. This work is part of a six-volume set that provides a broad overview of how ancient coinage provides us with a greater knowledge of the evolution of society--from the first crude blocks of stamped metal to the more highly sophisticated coins of the Byzantine. excellent item, helps illuminate earlier book.
very good, lots of information that lets you make sense of this complicated item.Without this book it is easy to make mistakes in time periods and emperors.It is especially good at helping you identify not attributed coins and details that you would otherwise miss or get incorrectly.One area it is helpful with is the cross over period between the western empire and the eastern empire and later combinations between the both of them. Excellent book especially for collector's and historians
Great Book. Well written and illustrated. Covers 470AD - 1300s in an interesting manner, excellent for coin & history buffs! Recommended reading :)
