Ash is back, baby, and more bitter than ever in THQ's follow-up to Evil Dead: Hail to the King. The city of Dearborn, MI, has been infested with Deadites and there's only one man alive who can clean them out. As the one-handed Ash, players can whack enemies with a shovel, shred them with a Gatling gun, rip into their bodies with a chainsaw, and make them chew lead with the boomstick, a 12-gauge double-barreled shotgun. Played from a third-person perspective, the game lets players use two weapons at once and features the wisecracking voice of Ash himself, Bruce Campbell. Up to 50 enemies can appear on the screen at any given time, but Ash can call upon the Book of the Dead's dark magic whenever he's in a pinch. Magic is replenished by collecting the souls of Deadites, and spells are acquired by finding scrolls hidden throughout each stage. Levels also feature multiple objectives that could involve locating more weapons, meeting with a certain character, or finding a way inside a specific building. Items such as keys to buildings, health packs, and other tools needed to advance are automatically stored in inventory. The heart of the game is combat, and players can attack creatures independently with either hand as well as block. A lock-on targeting system is used to isolate specific creatures, with two colors used to indicate whether or not an enemy is in range. If an enemy is in range, the lock-on system lets players keep attacking it no matter where its position is in relation to Ash. Finding the chainsaw allows Ash to perform special combos, such as the backhanded slash or chainsaw impale, with the latter freeing Ash's other hand to finish the job in gruesome fashion. Each completed level is available for play in a separate Arcade mode, where players try their hand at killing Deadites using a preset list of weapons. Letter rankings are awarded based on factors such as time, health remaining, number of kills, and body parts severed. Statistics earned during Arcade mode are also saved at the end of each stage, but recording progress during the main game requires players to find special tokens. Evil Dead also features video commentary from Bruce Campbell on the making of the game as well as concept art.

Pretty good for its time
Fistful of Boomstick is a pretty decent Evil Dead experience. Entertaining writing and acting, fun gameplay seamlessly mixing action and adventure style games, a memorable soundtrack, and unique areas and settings to explore inside the Evil Dead universe make this a must play for fans of Evil Dead. The boss fights are fairly disappointing and the graphics are simple at best, even for the time. Level design can also often be confusing and tough to navigate in its larger areas, but if you see it through it's an enjoyable experience full of great action and fun progression. The added arcade mode is also a plus. It will never be considered an all time classic, but it is a very serviceable game that should be given a real shot if you haven't tried it at this point.Fistful of Boomstick is a pretty decent Evil Dead experience. A very fun game for fans and initiates alike
As a long time Evil Dead fan and an even longer term Bruce Campbell fan (I saw The Adventures of Brisco County Junior long before Evil Dead), their was no question as to whether I was goint to enjoy this game. The fact that I can lop Deadites into several pieces while hitting the Y button for a witty one-liner voiced by Bruce Campbell; what else could they offer? In fact, much more. For fans of Resident Evil style survial horror, this game is right up your alley. The AI is intelligent, and when you can have upwards of three dozen Deadites chasing you on the screen, it can be a deadly game. You have to be careful and play smart. The camera, for the most part, is on your side, especially with over the shoulder firing available for when you are on the run. There are no real difficult ... The graphics are fairly good for their time, nothing revolutionary, but nothing bad either. The sound is high quality; when that chainsaw revs up, you know it. My only sticking point with the game is the same I had with Resident Evil; you don't have unlimited saves. You have to find save tokens and use them. You get free saves every level, but this is really a game that you have to sit down and play; you can't just play for fifteen minutes here and there if you expect to be able to save when you really need to. All in all, an excellent game. It can be fun to play around with the weapon combinations, since you have different ones for his hand and his nub beyond the shotgun and the chainsaw. Though for my money, what else is possibly worth using more than a boomstick?

You get to be Ash! How cool is that?
Game play is like being Ash from the movie. Works on my Xbox 360. Simple graphics and gameplay compared to modern war games, but, completely fun.

Love the evil dead everything Bruce does it justice voices so go boom 💥.
The Xbox wasn't much different from the playstation game but I don't have my ps2 and people want to much for it. So I still have my Xbox. And 20 bucks isn't bad .
