REVIEW: This latest double CD from R. David Cash and his band, Spirit of Hope, is a splendid collection of original & traditional songs that are, musically, somewhere on the Americana road nearing the intersection of spiritually danceable country-rock and country-blues. From the stark perception of the opening song, 'Alone,' through the rollicking dance hall beat of 'Cry Lord Have Mercy,' to the ending notes of the infectious classic, 'When the Saints Go Marching In,' the personal story of searching, salvation, sanctification and ultimate satisfaction is told in a style of painted experience colored with wit, wisdom and grace. Good Lord bless my soul Everything is vanity wherever I go Caressing here enticing there And everybody buying like it's going somewhere As I'm walking downtown with a suitcase in my hand I'm a vagabond wandering in the promise of the Promised Land Raise your eyes to the skyline Something coming just a matter of time It's not so far that you can ignore it You hide your eyes and you won't overcome it Listen to my intention You have to give it attention You have to make a decision Be saved Saved Saved Listen, life is just a moment and a moment ain't long It's like a Master Magician with the wave of his wand It's gone Blink your eyes and it's gone But, the soul will still live on If I had a sky pencil I'd write on the clouds Something everybody oughta know beyond any doubt Jesus Christ is the Son of God You don't need a Phd, blue-eyed looks or old money There's no whispered bribe to buy eternity There's no badges to be shown Secret password to be known Only way to Heaven's trusting faith alone SEMI-BIO: I have been pursuing God all of my life. Though in the beginning it was from a position of utter ignorance and foolishness there came a point where His Spirit burst through my pride,vanity & self-will and I found myself making a very real conscious choice to know Him in wisdom and in grace. In that realization I was saved from a life of restless, nomadic, semi-melodic blue living and band drifting, completely by His grace, and have lived with a tried, true and ever growing trust in Him, through Jesus Christ, since. In the crucible of passing years, circumstances and experience my faith is now, to be sure, concretely proven to the mettle of what His Spirit is in me - ever expanding and flourishing with new insights every day of my life into His character and my place in Him. Consequently, I confidently and whole heartedly embrace the glory in being a child of God - content in the position and place He has for my life, times and talent. By that same grace, absolutely and without question, the intention of my expression is to mirror Him in humble gratitude. And that expression, to be sure, is a result of baving been influenced musically by everyone I've ever heard or thought I heard, consciously, subconsciously and/or unconsciously. Though first and foremost by the music of Hank Williams Sr., Bob Dylan and including but not limited to my erstwhile and now distant cousin, Johnny Cash and, by marriage, the Carter Family. In understanding we are all reflectors in some sense I write/sing in my own purpose without a backward glance or peripheral nod to anything other than my spiritual conscience.
