Very Good, but "troubling" movie - Not for everyone.
Be prepared for people in very tough situations. Some are by their own making, and some by unavoidably difficult circumstances. Some they handled better, some terribly. The title does not suggest the story line at all. At the very end, it is "tied back together". This is not a "happy" movie. And most certainly not for kids. I am conservative, and I would not show this to teenagers either. For viewers that enjoy "slice of troubling life" movies, the storytelling was skillful. Scenes weave back and forth in time, foreshadowing things to come, and eventually "explaining" things seen earlier. There is some deeply personal insights into the softer side of some very hard people. Touching, actually. DEFINITELY not for everyone, at all, but a masterful movie. Writing was not there - Over acting by Benicio - Almost a 2 Star.
Plot: A freak accident brings together a critically ill mathematician, a grieving mother, and a born-again ex-con. I really never bought into the characters. Been around "born again ex-con Christians and their churches, and it did not ring true for me. It was like it was written by someone who watched too many scared straight TV shows. Penn play ill pretty well, but I also did not find the way the character was written working for me. Almost gave the movie a 2 Star rating. 21 Grams is a movie to either love or hate. It is an emotional rollercoaster with three outstanding performances! The film itself takes a careful watching as it shows events out of sequence in order to build theme and tension. Yet by the end of the film everything falls into place and makes sense. If you liked the story structure of "Memento", you may like this film. This is not a "popcorn flick", but insead a film that requires a thoughtful and concentrated viewing, but in my oppinion, the effort is well worth it.21 Grams is a movie to either love or hate. Great movie
My friend had half of the movie on his computer, but we didn't know that until half way through the movie when it stopped. This was the biggest cliff hanger ever and the point of my story being--> 21 grams was so entertaining that i jumped on ebay on purchased it from a seller and had it shipped priority inorder to finish the movie myself, as well as 3 other buddies were enjoying tremendously. (the local movie store had all copies checked out!) I know this is a poor review, but i dont want to spoil any of it. Its a great movie, its not about drugs (thats what i initially thought). If you like the movies Traffic and Crash, then you will love 21 Grams. This movie is much darker than the other two. The characters interact throughout the movie in a very believable fashion. If you are having a bad day and are looking to be cheered up, this is not the movie for you. However, if you are looking for a great movie tying together several different peoples lives and how they all impact each other, despite not knowing each other, then this is for you. 5 stars.
