I am giving this book as a gift to a sister who shared a movie with me called the "Red Violin". The book, "Antonietta" has a very similar story to the "Red Violin" movie and therefore, since I have not red the book, I will speak on the movie that is in its likeness. The film was an international co-production between companies in Canada, Italy and the United Kingdom. Spanning three centuries and five countries, the red violin came under the possession of many owners and was viewed as the perfect violin. However, to its owners, the violin causes anger, betrayal, love, and sacrifice. It appeared, however, that each owner was able to play the violin superbly. Its history is told in five stories set in different locations around the world. In the beginning, the red violin was created by a ... However, to its owners, the violin causes anger, betrayal, love, and sacrifice. It appeared, however, that each owner was able to play the violin superbly. Its history is told in five stories set in different locations around the world. In the beginning, the red violin was created by a violin maker whose pregnant wife died giving birth to their son. (Before her death, tarot cards signified that she would have a long life, and she did through the journeys the red violin would make, as it is her blood on the violin.) Deeply saddened that he lost both wife and son during the delivery, he took his masterpiece violin, that he had made for his unborn son in hopes that he would become a violinist, and varnished it with some of his beloved wife's blood, giving it its distinctive red color and its unique sound, and he painted it with a brush made from her hair. Throughout the film, we see Anna (the wife that died giving childbirth) and her servant, Cesca, who reads the tarot cards talking about Anna's future, when in fact, she is talking about the journey the red violin would make, as it is her blood on the violin. Down through the years the violin came into possession by different owners that were connected or influenced somehow by the violin; even though centuries, nationalities and countries separated them. In the 5th and final story, an appraiser for the violins named Morritz (played by Samuel L. Jackson), arrives in Montreal and discovers the red violin and has its varnish tested to prove its authenticy before its being auctioned off. He then purchased a copy of the red violin and later at the auction, exchanged and stoled the real red violin for the copy before it was auctioned, and then he took it home for his daughter to play. She became the new and final owner. The red violin finally was in the hands where it rightfully belonged - a true mystery - Was Morritz or his daughter related to Anna, the wife of the violin's creator?) The movie ends there. The movie, The Red Violin, won many awards, including an Academy Award for the Best Original Score (John Corigliano), 8 Genie Awards, 9 Jutra Awards, a Golden Reel Award (for sound editing), and a Best Artistic Contribution Award from the Tokyo International Film Festival. I really enjoyed the movie - it was interesting, uniquely different, suspenseful, and leaves you wanting to see it again and again. It is definitely an excellent story for conversation. The book, Antonietta will be viewed in a similar light.
