One of Cooder's finest efforts, you will play this one for years to com.
Native Angelino, Ry Cooder, has recorded with some of the biggest names in music, including the Rolling Stones, John Hiatt, Flaco Jimenez, Taj Mahal, Jackie DeShannon, and many others. For this project, he went knocking on doors in the barrios of East Los Angeles to get the story from the people who lived there. He took their stories and formed them into the story of how the people of Chavez Ravine were lied to and cheated out of their homes, only to have the land given to the Dodger organization for a baseball stadium. Every song is a story, a jewel in the crown of a beautiful album. My friend, Michael Mercado played trumpet with is elementary school band at the ground-breaking ceremony pictured on the booklet. Lalo Gurrero is featured on two of the songs, and he is in fine voice. ... GREAT musical talent, describing the sad history of a famous L.A. area.
Ry Cooder is a great musician and songwriter/performer. Each of his albums has a different genre and flavor. Chavez Ravine is extremely interesting because of its strong political statement about city/county government treatment of its residents, and the usual tragic results of "eminent domain" property seizures. This album contains the musical influence of the Hispanic and Hawaiian residents of Chavez Ravine in L.A. county before their properties were seized so that "Dodger Stadium" could be built on the land. GREAT music, great talent, revolving around a sad and interesting history.Ry Cooder is a great musician and songwriter/performer. Each of his albums has a different genre and flavor. Wow! This is as Amazing as any of Rys' best works
Well of course every album Ry has produced is incredible but this disc is off the chart. If you are curious about how gentrification is making people feel and are a single language idiot and wish you had an incredible forum for learning more then you will be amazed if you listen to this disc. I am a Big White Boy Fool in this 'hood but I scoop up as many Chavez Ravine discs as my wallet will allow so I can pass them around and be the coolest Human here. I be Coo now. I could write a thousand pages about how Rys' work elevates anybody that isn't living a 100% perfect life and now he has written an Album with Jesus that will put us in Heaven if we wish. No Musician is more amazing, you can be amazed on a musical level to listen to any album but if you get depressed study the words and float ... Well of course every album Ry has produced is incredible but this disc is off the chart. I lived this music
I was there , my mom and i did visit her friends in palo verde a few times. I remember the neighborhood very well and witnessed DODGER STADIUM built from the ground up , this music reflects all that happened

Great deal on a great CD.
Well, how are you gonna beat Ry Cooder? A couple of songs with his slide playing are worth it to me. I knew nothing of the history of this place. Amazing what one can learn from music.
