As quietly provocative as its thoughtful protagonist, Steve Skrovan and Henriette Mantel's galvanizing documentary, AN UNREASONABLE MAN, examines how one of the 20th century's most admired and indefatigable social activists, Ralph Nader, became a pariah among the same progressive circles he helped champion. Utilizing the standard documentary formula of archival footage, talking-head interviews, and the occasional computer-animated graphic, the film deftly traces Nader's life and career with a robust, lively pace that follows him from his upbringing in a Lebanese immigrant family that took its commitment to civic engagement very seriously (the family discussed politics at the dinner table and attended town-hall meetings together) to his role as the leading consumer advocate of the 1960s and '70s (when he took on the automobile industry and became responsible for many safety features modern consumers take for granted, such as seatbelts and airbags). But the film really picks up steam--and takes the form of an impassioned public debate--when it tackles the contentious 2000 and 2004 presidential runs that elicited accusations of splitting the Democratic vote and enabling the election of George W. Bush, making enemies of Nader's most ardent supporters (including celebrity pundits Michael Moore and Bill Maher; liberal journalists Eric Alterman and Todd Gitlin; and even former members of Nader's own advocacy group, Nader's Raiders) while cementing the continued respect of fellow activists like Mark Green and James Ridgeway. That all these figures appear on screen--alongside such disparate political luminaries as Phil Donahue, Pat Buchanan, and Nader himself--stands as a testament to the film's balanced approach, one that makes a nonpartisan plea that such a lifelong crusader for social justice not be remembered as a mere "spoiler," but as a consummate public advocate and a living example of the average citizen's power to participate in the democratic process.

    America's Only True Citizen

    Ralph Nader is the only person in the public arena who REALLY cares about justice for the common man. All politicians, including our President, act like they do, but actions speak louder than words. The documentary, which by the way, features Nader detractors as well as people who worked for him at the very beginning as Nader's Raiders, shows him as a man of the highest integrity, who has devoted his life to being a full time citizen. It also dispels the notion that he was a spoiler in the last two Presidential elections, showing how he was made a scapegoat by the Democrats, who simply ran a terrible campaign. The documentary covers his life from childhood, and the influence of his two strongly civic-minded parents who taught him early on that being a citizen of this country was the ...

    An UnReasonable Man

    A very well-made collage of history, ideas, agendas and politics, AUM is controversial only because of its subject matter (Ralph Nader). It is certainly not for those who treat politics as a sport and blindly wear their "team colors". It is for those few who think for themselves and who are interested in learning more about this amazing man and why such a revered working class hero would ever have seen fit to throw his hat into the political ring and sully (perhaps even destroy) such a spectacular and altrusitic legacy. The movie is very respectful of Nader but stops far short of being "on his side". It explores, in pretty good detail given the time constraints, his reasoning for entering the fray.     A top-notch documentary that is an eye-opening joy to watch!

    A very interesting and eye-opening documentary, filled with raw "tell it like it is" honesty and facts from the heart! Witnessing Ralph's sporadically-inserted commentary and that of others who support him is satisfying enough, but hearing the detractors' uncomplimentary statements (occasionally mixed with grudging commendations of the controversial crusader and at-least-partial agreement with some of his undeniable/unarguable points and statements) only serve to lend further respect and admiration for this outstanding political hero; they also reveal and demonstrate the dishonestly and selfishness he was up against when doing his lobbying and campaigning.     Ralph Nader - An Unreasonable Man

    A very well done and riveting documentary which pulls no punches. Yes, it has a political message, but its probably not what you expect. Many Americans owe their very lives to this icon of consumer protection and he has not deserved the political character assasination heaped upon him by both major parties. I bought two copies for my adult children because I want them to know all sides of this man's story. Its a great civics lesson.

    Excellent portrait of Nader's life and accomplishme

    I liked this movie very much. It fairly and throughly portrays Nader's accomplishments and his life from mid-60s to present. THe movie does not unfairly flatter Nader, but there are some criticism as well, although those criticisms are not very constructive and coherent. Anything comes out of Nader's mouth is truthful and comprehensive, thus it is very worth listening. He is a great political prophet, and you will receive great inspiration from him.
