The recipient of international acclaim, Vittorio de Sica's Italian Neorealist masterwork, THE BICYCLE THIEF, is a treasure of world cinema. After nearly two years of unemployment, Antonio (Lamberto Maggiorani) finally finds work posting bills. But he needs a bicycle to do the job. Unfortunately, he was forced to pawn his own bicycle long ago. In a humbling, tragic scene, Antonio exchanges his family's linen for his bicycle. But when the bike is stolen on his first day of work, he must comb the streets of Rome in search of the bike: his family's only means to survival. After three days of hunting, Antonio and his son, Bruno (Enzo Staiola), find the thief (Vittorio Antonucci)--but without witnesses or evidence, the police are unwilling to help Antonio. Hopeless, Antonio and Bruno wander aimlessly through Rome, landing outside of a soccer stadium where hundreds of bicycles are parked. His will broken, Antonio attempts to steal a bike but is caught in the act.Thematically, Vittoria de Sica's THE BICYCLE THIEF details an everyman story of loss of innocence in the face of a destitute society, while the film's poignant acting and directing creates an individual and heart-wrenching tale of one man's struggle to feed his family. The film is often considered one of the masterpieces of 20th century cinema.

    Italian Realism -- Visions of the Past/Future

    The Bicycle Thief was a new type of realism in film coming from Europe at the time. But watching it again, in this lagging economy of ours 60 years later. I could only empathize more with the characters of the story, as I see friends and family losing long held jobs from downsizing, out-sourcing, and housing markets falling apart. The simple story, simple characters, whom you have to realize are not normal actors...Vittorio De Sica liked to cast normal people, in parts to give them more realism to the piece. It plays brilliantly for the post-war torn Italy of the late 40's, but also holds true to the economic situations of today happening around the world. The extras on the DVD were okay, but left me feeling for more.

    One of De Sica's best

    Excellent film quality for a movie made in the 1940s. The plot line itself is unsatisfying because the thief is not caught and the bicycle is not recovered, so there will be much suffering and misery to follow for the main characters. However, the plot was not the purpose of the film; it seems that De Sica made the movie to show the pain and poverty in post-war Italy, not to tell the story of the theft of a bicycle.

    MY FATHER SAW THIS MOVIE WHEN HE WAS A LITTLE BOY IN ITALY; IT BROUGHT BACK MANY GOOD MEMORIES OF A TIME NOW LONG AGO!

    The Bicycle Thief (1998, DVD). Italian

    I bought this product because I am currently studying Italian and thought it would help me in the process; and it did. I like the product because the language spoken is entirely in Italian with English sub-titles which also assists me in checking my comprehension what is being said. The movie also had a beautiful plot which made viewing it really entertaining. I would say that this DVD movie rates as high if not higher than other DVDs on the market. I have absolutely no complaints whatsoever.
