From the best-selling novel by Peter Benchley, Steven Spielberg directed this thrill ride of terror. During the height of beach season, the Massachusetts resort town of Amity Island is terrorized one summer by surprise attacks from a great white shark. Three unlikely partners team up to hunt down the rogue and destroy it: the new chief of police from New York (Roy Scheider), a young university-educated oceanographer (Richard Dreyfuss), and a crusty old-time fisherman (Robert Shaw). The film shoot was notoriously difficult for the young Spielberg, who had directed only one feature film before JAWS. The mechanical shark seldom operated correctly, and Spielberg was frequently forced to create the idea of terror without actually showing the shark. However, after the film premiered it went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time--surpassing THE GODFATHER and becoming the first film to gross more than a hundred million dollars. Composer John Williams created the score to JAWS, which has since become a well-known theme of impending doom. Ron and Valerie Taylor were responsible for filming live sharks in Australia; their sequences were later mixed with footage of the mechanical shark.

I remember when this film first came out. The response to it was unbelievable. Terror stalked beach communities from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Someone even put a shark in a fountain in Connecticut! People were scared to death to go to the beach. New Jersey and New England beaches were practically empty the whole summer. Talk about "The Summer Of Sam" that was nothing compared to the "Summer Of JAWS!". What a film. When a simple movie can have that kind of impact on an entire country what is there to say!?! The film's use of music, suspense and instant terror was the best. The very beginning with the girl was outstanding. I always thought she should have gotten an Oscar just for that performance. The four main characters: the chief, the shark expert, the captain and of course the shark are given equal time to develop the characters (of course you can only do so much with a shark). The tension is never relaxed. You can't wait to see what happens next. Of course most people were shocked by Shaw's demise because it really was the only graphic scene in the picture. The story builds to the war between these three humans and one incredible fish. And the fish nearly prevails! A little far-fetched to be sure. But most movies are. And they should be. After all it's only a movie!

Building your film library with "Jaws"
The movie "Jaws" is an American classic. Everyone should have this in their personal library. This film influenced its generation of viewers and is still making waves today. Who doesn't recognize the shark's theme music? This movie depicts the genius of a budding Steven Spielberg. My order came in several weeks ago and I think I watched it twice - back to back. I was hungry for the shark. I was hungry for a piece of film history when story lines where simple but honest. I wanted to remember a time when very few special effects where used to enhance a film. I bought the collector's edition and was very satisfied with my choice, but I was secretly wishing it would come in a very shiny silver box with a holographic shark on front. (It didn't) People buy movies for different reasons, ... The movie "Jaws" is an American classic. Everyone should have this in their personal library. It's a classic! Intense, with a knowing that this can ACTUALLY happen! No aliens or fantasy creatures, real earth, real fish, does what it does = EAT !! Maybe seeing it at the impressionable age of 12, AND sitting in the front row at the theatre, left me with a larger sense of curiosity about our planet. And how mindlessly selfish politicians are !!! That hasn't changed, has it?? I'll keep JAWS in my movie collection for those days when life's petty problems are annoying me. The first 15 minutes alone will help you get a grip on the BIG picture. What's important and what's NOT. Be kind and BE CAREFUL.It's a classic! Intense, with a knowing that this can ACTUALLY happen! Fish Story Is A Whopper
3 decades after it's release, still one of the best of all time. Seeing this as a kid, I had nightmares that my bed was floating in the ocean, and Jaws was out there going to get me. Just remembering the horror parts are enough to make me cringe, but seeing this movie again recently made me realize what a good story and what an excellent cast this movie brought with it. Roy Scheider will forever be remembered for the man who killed Jaws. What's amazing is the movie is scary, and you don't even see the shark for like the whole first hour of the movie, and it's still compelling. And the part where Richard Dreyfuss checks out that ship and the decomposed head pops out, I jump every time I see that. Extra deleted scenes, and the Making of Jaws are worth watching, even though no extras ... 3 decades after it's release, still one of the best of all time. A great classic that never gets old!
This is one of those favorites that never gets old. This movie is still so enguaging and holds ones interest the whole way thru. I've had it almost 2 months now and watched it over 6 times. A real keeper!
