Fantastic "Pocket Camera"...Does it all without the bulk and weight !
It's got a lot of features that other cameras do not have, such as an "Optical Viewfinder" which is in addition to the "screen". I also like that I can control the brightness of the picture before I take it. ~It doesn't require much light to do a splendid job, so not much need of the "Flash" feature unless maybe at night. Too much light will certainly ruin a picture, but if you discover that, just shut off the flash. ~ Also, it only requires 2 AA Batteries. No need to charge up with a Charger. ~AA Batteries will be around long after the "special rechargeable battery" that comes with many cameras. ~You wont hear, "I'm sorry, that battery is no longer available." ~It also puts a date on your picture, so that one day when you get old and gray, you can see exactly when that picture was ... This is a True Canon with excellent optics that produces very good photos. I will create this review in the form of comparison to another Canon point and shoot I use-A720IS. SIZE: The 1400 is small enough to fit in a shirt pocket. It gets lost in a normal small carrying case. The A720 is the size of the others in this family like the A620. It will not fit in a shirt pocket. It is best carried in either a case or on the provided strap. PICTURE TAKING: 1400 difficult to hold unless you have small hands and fingers. A720 designed so right side of camera is raised for a hand hold. Both use easy to find AA batteries. 1400 uses 2; 720 uses 4. Both have a combination of view finder and screen. WHY BUY? I bought this camera as a back-up for the 720. It is a Canon with a view finder. I started many years ago with the Canon AE-1 and found it was too big for its use on hikes and climbing. Went to the 620 which I sold and bought the 720 and then the 1400.

Great value for the price
I wanted an inexpensive alternative to my wife's expensive Canon 60D. A camera that we could take everywhere without the constant worry about it being damaged, lost, or stolen. I mainly chose the A1400 because it has a viewfinder. Overall, I have been happy with the camera. It easily fits into my shirt pocket and works flawlessly. It's easy to download images to my computer and I like that it uses AA batteries. The only real negative is that its image quality, while not bad, is nothing to get excited about. But we have the 60D that we use when image quality really matters. If I were to lose this A1400, I would probably try to find another one to buy. Good pocket sized camera.
Great little camera and love the optical view finder for lining up outdoor pics in bright sunlight. Easy to use for quick close pics but lens doesn't take full advantage of 16MP capability on distance shots. Camera does have battery compartment weak pint as battery spring contacts are are stronger than plastic battery compartment and will eventually require adding tape as was needed on the Fuji it replaces. The camera is in excellent condition. The price is reasonable for a camera that looks and works like new, and that is in demand because these cameras are no longer made. We like these cameras so much that we have worked hard at finding one even though they are not made any more. The big advantage of the camera is the optical viewfinder, which is functional even in bright sunlight, is usable without glasses, and provides a more stable shooting stance, with the camera braced against the head, than cameras that are held at arms' length. Furthermore, the camera uses easily available AA cells instead of a proprietary battery that may not be replaceable. Finally, the camera is compact and light. Some have complained about the fact that the lens sees "lower down" than the viewfinder. This is ... The camera is in excellent condition.
