Elton John's Rock of the Westies in Review
How this album/CD brings back memories of attending my very first concert at Madison Square Garden in New York. Short of single releases this album, for me, is an album I can listen to over & again. Some have said that this was not one of his best, an album thrown together to finalize an obligation. I would have to disagree personally. There isn't anything on this album that I don't like. It's hard driving at times (Grow Some Funk Of Your Own, Street Kids, Hard Luck Story, Island Girl) And somewhat mello with an edge (Feel Like A Bullet In The Gun of Robert Ford, Feed Me). This album may be missing Nigel Olsen and Dee Murry, two of Elton's original members, but this album rocks and holds it's own. Worth Waiting For
I believe this is the album after Captain Fantastic and right before the Blue Moves double album. I spent a summer enjoying Captain Fantastic, and when this album came out, I was pleased, but it wasn't another Captain Fantastic. Elton had new members in the band, and it was noticeable not for the worst, just different. I bought this album on vinyle when it came out, then bought the cd last month finnally. So it's worth buying twice. The first song is excellent Yell Help. The second song Dan Dare is another great example of comedy, and harmony, for Elton. Island Girl is a classic slide guitar and xlephone virtuoso. Grow Some Funk of Your own is cool, with that cool guitar sound first heard on Caribou I think. Hard Luck Story is a great drivin blues/rock song, perhaps a transition song between Captain Fantastic and Blue Moves, musically speaking. I can say that about Feed Me too, with a little Madman Across the Water and Caribou thrown in. Billy Bones and the White Bird is prolly why this is ROCK of the Westies, check it out. Beatles influence? The bonus tracks: These weren't on the original album, so I've only listened to them a few times. I'll prolly skip over them next time. Coffehouse stuff and another ballad. Now, to give you a perspective with history: It was not common knowledge that Elton was gay until after the next album, Blue Moves. In my opinion, his music took a nose dive for a while after Blue Moves. He had one good song after that Still Standing, then the Lion King. Listening to Elton growing up is prolly the greatest musical influence in my life. The first concert I went to was Elton. My little brother Danny really got into the image, getting mom and dad to buy every pair of wierd sunglasses he could get his hands on. I never got into the image of man, my interset always was, and always will be the music. Dan still doesn't know it, he hates Elton now because of Elton being gay. He loved the image, didn't hear the music so much. I couldn't care less, I only see the music. Thanks Elton, for ALL of the great music that helps me shape the way I percieve the world. Srry bout the spelling errors ridiculess.

A good album by a great artist.
Any Elton fan will appreciate this album. As for me (someone simply buying it for a friend) I don't even know half the songs on the disk. I have however purchased on itunes the song "Rock of the Westies" and it is absolutely fantastic.

Very different, I enjoyed
I had this album as a kid, and decided to get it again. Its very eclectic in the styles of the songs. I believe this was when Bernie Taupon (sp?) was not writing for him. Overall I like it.
