HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL: Vincent Price has one of his juiciest roles in this haunted-house thriller as millionaire playboy Frederick Loren, who invites five guests out to a genuine haunted house, offering them each $10,000 if they spend the night. Elisha Cook Jr. plays one of the guests, a nervous alcoholic who has been in this house before and witnessed some terrible things. Mr. Loren's beautiful but treacherous wife (Carol Ohmart) is also present--and might be out to kill Frederick during the course of the evening; then again, he might be out to kill her. Severed heads, a skeleton, an acid vat, ghostly screams, and a noose that creeps around on its own and strangles unsuspecting victims are just some of the treats in a film that has been spooking delighted audiences on late-night TV for decades. Producer-director William Castle (THE TINGLER) claimed this was filmed in a process called Emergo, which meant that at a key moment a glow-in-the-dark skeleton on a wire was rigged to sail over the audience's heads. The skeleton is long since gone, but the goofy thrills remain in this classic tale, from a script by Robb White. LAST MAN ON EARTH: Based on Richard Matheson's SF thriller I AM LEGEND, THE LAST MAN ON EARTH is about a man who survives a global plague only to be stalked nightly by zombielike victims who call out his name. Vincent Price stars as Robert Morgan, a scientist who tried desperately to come up with a cure for an airborne virus that was killing people around the globe. Although he could not develop a serum in time to save his family, he himself seems to be immune from the disease. Thus, he is left to wander the streets by day, staking zombies, then barricading himself in his house each night as the zombies try to break in and kill him. Price is excellent in the role, going about his horrible business as if it were just another day: waking up and eating breakfast, putting on a suit, calmly staking the zombies, making dinner, listening to records at night. But when he suddenly sees what looks like another living soul out in the daylight, his world is suddenly turned inside out.

But the conditions are that the doors are locked at midnight and can't be opened until the morning. There is no other way out and no phones in case they want to call ofr help. There are 7 ghosts because 7 people were killed in the house over the years. Filmed in black and white in 1958, the picture quality is very clean and crisp. The interplay between the different characters and th way Price plays on the flaws in their personalities is the core of the mystery. There are twists and turns in the plot and you don't know who or what is causing all the mishaps. As things progress, they start to suspect each other and that adds to the mix. The ending also is a surprise, and, this being a murder mystery, is as it should be. This is a well produced mystery with good acting and a decent plot, with NO gore. Vincent Price was in dozens of movies over his long career and it is doubtful that many of them were much better that this production. Not rated, it probably would be considered PG today, based primarily on the suspense. THE LAST MAN ON EARTH: This is based on a novel "I am a Legend" by Richard Matheson, and was later made into a movie, "The Omega Man", starring Charlton Heston in 1971. I thoroughly enjoyed the Heston movie, but this one is better. There is a catastrophic event that causes a plague. The only normal person left apparently is a scientist played by Vincent Price. Everyone else is a vampire who come out at night and try to get him. So, during the day he hunts them out, and at night barricades himself in his home for protection. The movies is so realistic as to what you would expect it would be like to be the last person alive. He searches to get what he needs and he can't make any mistakes. One omission, one slip up will mean he is caught by the vampires. He has to get fuel for his home generator and for his car. He needs to replenish the garlic from the grocery store to keep the vampires away. He runs the lathe to make wooden stakes to kill them as well. This movie covers all the details. And Price displays the dispair and anguish one would feel if they had lost everyone they loved and were now alone. Vincent Price is the narrator of the movie, the main character and really why this is such a good movie. However, there is a significant problem. The quality of the video is really not very good, especially for a movie produced in 1964. It is in black and white; it is grainy and the contrast is off significantly. This is a better than average horror movie. If you can overlook the film quality, the acting, storyline and attention to detail make for an interesting film.

Been loving the classics. Last man in earth I believe was the first movie of the book "I am legend", also comes before Charlton Heston "Omega man" and the newer will Smith "I am legend" Only this one was heavily based on vampire like zombies. Ended was kinda boring but the story itself is good. Definitely shows it's age in that regard (old movies endings are usually abrupt and leaves you with more questions than answers )Been loving the classics. Weird setup
Never experienced a DVD setup like this before. The double-feature is presented as one film. Scene selection is available so it's relatively easy to forward to the second movie, but it's a little weird that you're not given the choice of the film you'd like to see at the get go.

Vincent Price, the master.
Last man on Earth is a great film. Much more creepy and scary than the remake, (I am Legend). House on haunted hill is also good.
