Focusing on the battles in between the War of 1812 and the Civil War, The History Channel: Civil War -- A Nation Divided follows players as they take the roles of generals such as Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, and guide troops into triumphant victory or heart-breaking defeat. Gamers face off with a variety of enemies, such as British redcoats, Santa Ana's Mexican army, and even feared pirate Captain Lafitte, in an effort to complete 43 single-player missions and 12 multiplayer missions. <br><br>To complete this task, players are outfitted with over 100 units, ten types of walls, and 50 buildings to create and defend a base or attack and lay siege to an enemy encampment. Along with participating in battle, players must also spend time managing their fortifications, hospitals, depots, and kitchens to make sure all troops are healthy, armed, and fed. The History Channel: Civil War -- A Nation Divided is designed to add a level of authenticity to the gameplay, and therefore has adjusted the accuracy of weapons to reflect their abilities. For example, musket fire will not necessarily hit an enemy soldier, and cannons fired out of range rarely hit their target.

Civil War: A Nation Divided PS2 Game
This game is alot of fun and so much better than the original PC version. You can play as a Union or Confederate soldier in many of the historic battles of the Civil War. I was impressed by the accuracy of the battle fields, having visited most of these personally. It really gives you the chance to see what it must have been like using period weapons and only having one shot at times. Its more fun when you reach the levels with repeating rifles even tho some of these guns were not readily available during the War. Be sure and look around the campsites and buildings to see what you can find when the shooting dies down. The most fun to me was firing the cannons on several levels and the Gatlin Gun really does the damage to the opposing forces and the landscape. This game is based on actual ... Average at Best Civil War First Person Shooter Game
Civil War: A Nation Divided is set during the American Civil War which took place between 1861 to 1865. This is the classic struggle between the Northern Union Armies and the Southern Confederate Armies. Civil War is a first person shooter type game where you'll play as both a Union and Confederate soldier in twelve of America's most legendary battles including Gettysburg, Bull Run, and Antietam. The game was released by Activision in conjunction with the History Channel and is the only first person Civil War Shooter thus far released on the PS2 platform. The game's controls are very similar to Activision's very popular WWII first person shooter series "Call of Duty". That, unfortunately, is where the similarity ends. Civil War has lots of problems which hamper the overall game experience which could have been exceptional but ends up being just average. For any Civil War history buff this game will be quite disappointing. As a quick example the game starts off in 1861 and the infantry soldiers (north and south) are armed with repeating rifles and hand grenades. Repeating rifles were not made available until very near the end of the war and I won't even comment on the grenades. As far as the story line, well, there really isn't any and even if there was the North wins regardless of your actions. The short video that plays before each battle is quite basic, although some of the pictures and maps are interesting, but the narration itself is dull. Civil War is basically a lot like most other first person shooter games except its a lot slower and more frustrating. The weapons don't aim well and the computer doesn't register hits on your enemies even when you're in close. The hand grenades don't help as you can't throw them far and they don't seem to do a whole lot even when they explode next to someone. You'll start off each level with an objective, other than firing shot after shot at the enemy without hitting anything. These objectives include everything from the classic blowing things up to stealing top secret documents or just finding a fellow officer. The objectives are fairly straight forward and easily accomplished if you just stay low and keep behind cover. However, it becomes frustrating while in a battle when the enemy starts shooting through wagons and trees where you can't even see them let alone return fire. I also thought the graphics were clunky, the voice overs dull, and the battles quite slow. Civil War does have some positives. The best of which is that someone finally put out a war based first person shooter that doesn't take place during WWII. Some of the battle scenes were also impressive as were some of the background scenes. Its nice seeing Activision taking a chance on a game like this but its unfortunate this was the best they could do. For a better war based first person shooter try either Medal of Honor European Invasion or the third Call of Duty installment. Both are done very well and have excellent and realistic graphics, great sound, and fantastic game play.

Great Starter Game
I would say this is a great starter game for war fighting gamers. This is not a great game to get if you are a lover of Call of Duty or Medal of Honor games. This one is a lot slower and graphics aren't as good as those other games I mentioned. My boyfriend loves this game and the other History Channel games but he was glad it was the first one he played. After playing some of the other high action fast paced shooting games he played this one again and it was kind of boring to him. I enjoyed watching him play it, as I do all his games, and the story is very interesting as well. I would say this is also a great game for kids as there are no real bloody scenes or swearing. Fun for all ages. This is a game we will keep in our video game library and it is really a fun ... I would say this is a great starter game for war fighting gamers. For the price, learning a bit of history whilst playing this game is great!
I bought this game because I trust the History channel , I played the south and the Rebel yells permeating the game play was great , the reloading is of course slow and makes you aim , which is period for the game . The action is in my opinion great , I'm not a big fan of first person shooters , but when you have to measure your ammo instead of unloading on everything with machine guns has turned me around a bit . Would make good home school material for the historic teaching!
I usually stick to WWII, Vietnam and sniper context games with the occasional side trip to golf. This game however gripped my attention to the point I finished the entire game on bot easy and normal settings with in one day. The historical commentary is invaluable for the younger players to about age 13. That is about the age where a body begins to understand the necessity of the periodic war. Horrific though it is. The graphics are decent for an elder game and the action seems t be moderately realistic. Overall score on this of FOUR.I usually stick to WWII, Vietnam and sniper context games with the occasional side trip to golf.
