Set in the United Kingdom during the tumultuous 1960s and ‘70s, BREAKFAST ON PLUTO tells the story of Patrick "Kitten" Braden (an electrifying Cillian Murphy), an orphan from a small Irish town who dreams of escaping his drab surroundings. Though his orphan status is enough to make him an outsider, Patrick's gleeful decision to become the cross-dressing Androgynous Kitten sends him into the outside world for good. He ends up at the trailer home of traveling musician Billy Rock (Gavin Friday), who is hiding weapons used by the IRA in a series of vicious attacks. After an unexpected tragedy, Kitten says farewell to Ireland and heads for the glamorous, rough-and-tumble streets of London, where she faces hatred and hardship in equal measure. Through it all, Kitten somehow retains her unwavering spirit, teaching a valuable lesson about staying hopeful and optimistic in the face of harsh degradation.Murphy's portrayal of the fiercely flamboyant Kitten is a sight to behold. Was looking forward tob eing entertained. sadly, I wasn't. Don't waste your money.
The heavy Irish and English accents were often impossible to understand; the entire movie was divided into to may disconnected segments, many of which were completely unnecessary. Instead of 129 minutes, it could easily have been cut to 90 - and it still would not have made much sense, or made me care about the lead character. The first two minutes, with birds communicating, did make me curious about what would follow. Unfortunately, what followed have very few entertaining moments (most 20 seconds or less. If you are looking for a quirky movie, this is the one to get. Set in Ireland in what looks to be the early to mid 1960's, this story about an 'orphaned' child builds through the child's early years up into his/her early 20's. Growing up in Ireland and, eventually England, at the height of the free-love, mind-expanding generation, it is the story of 'Kit' who is in search of his/her mother. Kit goes on an adventure to find the fairy-tale mother who left him/her on the doorstep of the church when he/she left to find himself/herself in London. The machinations and drama that Kit goes through in his/her quest to discover himself/herself is well worth watching. The background story is also excellent. Not just another funny story about drag queens
This is the story of a boy who wants to be a girl, who goes on a journey to find his mother but really finds himself along the way. I got this because it had Cillian Murphy in it, but when it started I was unsure if I made a good choice. However, by the end, the story all came together and I was very pleased with having seen it. Cillian did a great job, as did the rest of the cast. I thought having Stephen Rea, from The Crying Game, was a funny touch. The movie is not all humor though, like a lot of movies about drag are. There are a lot of serious things going on and the fact that he's a man in drag becomes secondary to the rest of the story.This is the story of a boy who wants to be a girl, who goes on a journey to find his mother but really finds himself along the way. An irresistable fairy tale!
This is one of the most charming movies you will see in your lifetime, if you're open to it. Cillian Murphy gives the performance of a lifetime as Patrick "Kitten" Braden a transvestite waif who blissfully wanders the IRA wasteland of late 70's Ireland and England seemingly indestructible in her optimism and energy. The movie is unabashedly quirky and delirious from the very start, and were it not for the irresistable loving nature of "Kitten" perhaps it would be too much to take. Brilliantly directed by Neil Jordan, this film is more like The Crying Game through rose colored glasses. Stephen Rea, Brenden Gleeson, and Liam Neeson all deliver wonderful performances in a story that at its heart is about bringing a lost little boy to terms with losing the family he never had but so ...
