Criminal and law shows are a dime a dozen these days. You can't flip through the channels without coming across some type of courtroom drama. Because the market is so saturated it takes a special kind of show to stand up and get the attention of a viewer. Leave it to David E. Kelley; the man behind Alley McBeal and The Practice to come up with Boston Legal. When the show began back in 2004 the formula for success had already been established. The characters of Denny Crane (William Shatner), Alan Shore (James Spader), Sally Heep (Lake Bell), and Tara Wilson (Rhona Mitra) all appeared on The Practice and were carried over for their own show. Next to Spader and Shatner, other big names like Candace Bergen and Rene Auberjonois joined the cast in the first season as new characters. With talent ... With talent like this it was hard to dismiss Boston Legal and the show went on to be a success. The basic concept of the show is to follow the lives of key attorneys at Crane, Poole, and Shmidt as they work through various cases and office banter. That part is pretty much stereotypical for the genre. What really breaks the mold with Boston Legal is the manner in which the show handles itself. Flamboyant, irreverent, self-referential, and naughty are some words that could be used to describe the demeanor of the series. It's a show filled with laughs, great character development, and a good ratio of successful stories. It's easy to see why Kelley's show became a hit. There are many great stories this season such as "Truly, Madly, Deeply" where Denny shoots his client, "Legal Deficits" which features Brad and Denise going undercover to try to find a kidnapped child, and "Race Ipsa" where Denny shoots somebody; this time his therapist. These particular ones are, in my opinion, the best of the best but to be honest the entire season is very strong. If you enjoyed the first season or even a single episode of Boston Legal this is a set that deserves to be in your collection. When all of the pieces fall into place and something fresh and endearing comes from such a simple concept that's a rare thing. It doesn't happen enough in television so that makes Boston Legal something special. Shatner, Bergen, Spader, Auberjonois, and the rest of the cast are all brilliant here. There are a few points this season where the dialogue feels a little preachy, like the writers wanted to get up on a soap box on some issues but they still fit in with the flow of the show. This season hits so many great notes that the few missteps are easy to overlook. Definitely check this out if you're in need of a good laugh. BL Season II
Another well done DVD release for Season Two of "BL." The physical components are quality with each series of episodes included in their own plastic cases all housed within the cardboard slip cover. They even included a flyer for the BL online store! Classic episodes include: "The Black Widow" and "Schadenfreude" with Heather Locklear. Denny Crane (Shatner) has some fine moments in "Gone" where he shoots a homeless guy who threw a brick at him, with a paint-ball gun; "Race Ipsa," in which Denny shoots his therapist who threatened to shoot him! "Squid Pro Quo," is another zany episode where Attorney Marlene Stanger (Parker Posey) joins the firm and buts heads with Denise Bauer (Julie Bowen). Alan Shore’s (James Spader) antics are too numerous to list here but classic moments include ... Another well done DVD release for Season Two of "BL." Boston Legal is one of the best TV series ever.
Boston Legal is one of the best TV series we've seen. We cut the cable a year ago and binge watch old series. This has been our favorite to date. It makes compelling points while making us laugh out loud at least once per episode. It's rare to find a show this good that refuses to take itself too seriously. Highly recommended!

So much so that sponsors funded 27 episodes in season 2 after a highly successful 17 episode season 1 broke out for our attention, a nearly 60% increase. Part soap opera, part legal drama, part social commentary and plenty of office hi-jinks to keep viewers chattering about things over the company water cooler, it appeals to a wide audience with a wide variety of cases about current issues. Featuring a cast that grabs your attention from the first moment, the viewer is not disappointed. William Shatner, James Spader and Candice Bergen keep jousting with each other over all things from major legal dramas to ... Boston Legal is a series penned by a real life attorney, David E. Great Series!
It was a great series then and it's just as good the second time around. Just enough time has elapsed that I can't remember the episodes. Great thing to have when it's a dead night on TV. Even with cable, HuLu and Netflix, there are some of those times.
