Anime is meant to be read in Subtitles.
I'm an anime fan, Outlaw star was once a highlight of Cartoon Networks Toonami programming slot right after school between 3pm and 5pm est. Various versions of this anime have come out from a variety of sources the best being direct from Asia. This particular version was released by Bandai and is in dual language format. As a rule if you can't get the Uncut Japanese version get it fandubbed and uncensored till it is licensed in the US. Or risk the horrors of the Malaysian Censorship Bureau's bleach pen, and nightmare censorship. Such problems are not a concern with this as outlaw star has few Fanservice moments. If I had to compare this anime with another I'd say if you liked Cowboy Beebop this is it's younger less mature brother with lots of raised voices and ... It follows the tried and true tendency of most anime to generally limp along establishing interpersonal relationships and gathering new faces until about the half way point. When a semi catastrophic event inspires the main character to quickly draw the premise to a close. Outlaw star had 26 episodes most of which feature uninspired meandering, mild tragedy, drama, and self reflection. And guys complain about girl anime being boring. Buy to complete your classic anime collection, buy Japanese for real content, and avoid Malaysia and American releases when you can. Death to Censorship!!

The complete series - for a completely cheap price!
For those who remember Toonami, you'll probably remember Outlaw Star. This show aired, in an edited format, in the afternoon block from 2001 through 2004 at varying times and dates. The series focused on Gene Starwind, a bounty hunter and jack-of-all-trades who works with his partner, Jim Hawking. However, a twist of fate (and a girl in a suitcase) winds up taking Gene and Jim on a journey into the stars - and lands them one of the most advanced starships in existence: a ship built with the power of the Space Forces and the grappling combat arms of the Kei Space Pirates. Unfortunately, this marks Gene and his companions for death from the pirates and for capture (at least) from the Space Forces - leaving him and his crew outlaws. Spanning over 26 episodes, the format for this ... For those who remember Toonami, you'll probably remember Outlaw Star. This show aired, in an edited format, in the afternoon block from 2001 through 2004 at varying times and dates. Spanning over 26 episodes, the format for this series is somewhat similar to another popular show of the time: Cowboy Bebop, though it should be noted that it appears like the idea for Outlaw Star came first (but both shows were made by Sunrise, so there's no problems there). A few episodes have an overarching storyline to them (a few two-parters, and the first four episodes have a plot line strung through them - as do the final four episodes). Most episodes deal with Gene and company trying to 'make it big,' or at least trying to make ends meet. Comedy is mixed with strong science-fiction well, and the writing is quite solid - as are the unique character and mechanical designs. When it comes to the acting, the dub is quite excellent - though several have criticized the dub for adding swear words where there were few or none in the original script. Personally, I think the dub in general adds more to the characters themselves, but the sub is also quite good on it's own. As for extras, the discs are taken right from the original releases a few years back (despite the box proclaiming 3 discs, this is a 6 disc set), meaning we still have the old advertising and few other extras beyond that. Originally available in a series of three two-disc sets (or in a boxset collecting them all) for thirty bucks apiece (or 90 for the boxset), the entire series is now at around 30 bucks MSRP, which is a steal for the whole series. It's not a perfect show, but the series is a decidedly enjoyable one if you're a fan of action or science fiction as a whole. A must for almost any sci-fi anime fan, and heavily recommended for anyone who likes anime or science fiction in general.

Review of a anime during the 1990s craze-Outlaw Star!
Through Outlaw Star does resemble Cowboy Bebop during its time in terms of animation drawings and techs., OS does have more of a focus to the plot than CB. Based on a manga, OS tells the story of Gene Starwind and his crew of the Outlaw Star. Gene gets caught up with a war betweeen pirates with his rescuing of Althena, an bioandroid who is the key to finding and unlocking the Galatic Leyline, a mysterious legendary treasure of power. Through out the show, Gene and his companions fight the pirates while reaching the Leyline. In terms of comedy, this show had alot of funny moments that will make you remember the series for a long time (like the hot springs, self-destruct maintenance, and most weird, alien cactus). In terms of action, it was O.K. through it was not as rememerable (through ... However the series's weakpoint is towards the end with the revelation of the Leyline. The series keeps you in suspense of what the Leyline is, not hinting to what it should be. When the viewer finds out, you should be disappointed and be reminded of a other anime/manga plot that have a item be like it. Also the decision to give characters's drastic makeovers (to symbol growing up) makes you wonder where the characters were that you loved. Voices: I may be biased since this is one of the first animes I saw but most of the English were really good and fit the characters. Japanese voices are really bad and not really good like the English. Last say: I do agree with other that this collection is cheap and can be easily afforded and commonly able. If you are looking for a good sci-fi/action/comedy with a less serious tone for a plot, get OS than CB. It is worth the money.

"Outlaw Star" takes place in the future. Humans have left the Earth and have colonized many areas in space, but the universe is still largely a mystery. This story follows a bounty hunter who loves the ladies and is always in debt, a pre-teen who has the intellect of a genius, an android who can't remember her past, but is vital to the group's future, a woman not unlike a samurai warrior who favors ancient techniques to new-fangled weaponry, an alien who is like a werewolf changes but into a tiger-like creature instead of a wolf-like creature, and the ship, call the OUTLAW STAR who has a mind of his own. Together this band of misfits travel through space, try to escape debt, destroy their enemies, and discover the secrets of the android's past. This a terrific ... The series is very well done and so awesome!!
Loves: the series! The fact that it has the never-before-seen-on-Adult Swim-or-Toonami hot springs planet episode, as well as all the other episodes, all in the original Japanese audio and uncut format if i so please (because it's supposed to)! And the DVDs are all in tip-top shape (no scratches)! Dislikes: The cover of the box set has a very very small dent, as well as little scratches that would constitute it as looking used, but it was supposed to be anyway, so no surprise there. Overall, GREAT product! Glad to add it to my collection of anime!!Loves: the series!
