Caprica DVD review
As this pilot for the Galactica prequel series Caprica is not due to air on tv until early next year. I bit the bullet and decided to purchase this unrated version of the Caprica pilot. Having been an ardent follower of all 4 seasons of Galactica, I did wonder if Caprica would be a spin off for the sake of it, but after viewing this pilot movie I have to say it exhibits a lot of potential as an ongoing series. It is more of a slow burner and less of an attention grabber than the Galactica premiere was, but is is fair to say all the signs of intelligent, quality drama that were Galactica's hallmarks are still there. Chronicling the birth of the Cylon's from an all too human tragedy, the film boasts good central performances from Eric Stoltz as Daniel Graystone and Esai Morales as Joseph ... Chronicling the birth of the Cylon's from an all too human tragedy, the film boasts good central performances from Eric Stoltz as Daniel Graystone and Esai Morales as Joseph Adama who is instantly believable as the father of William from Galactica, Capricas emphasis is however much more domestic and character based than Galactica's more military action tone and the producers are brave to try such a different type of show. Whether Caprica will truly rival its parent show remains to be seen but for anyone interested in the Galactica mythos this is well worth a look. This DVD release features a fair amount of nudity and explicit violence which will most likely be toned down when it airs next year. The DVD itself is worth grabbing for those who simply cant wait for the tv broadcast and makes a stopgap until the inevitable boxset, there are a few signs that this DVD release was rushed, the unimaginative sleeve design and horrific typos on the reverse definitely leave a lot to de desired. Caprica is also only currently available in region 1 format, which seems something of an oversight considering Galactica's worldwide popularity.

A Great Prequel to a great series
Caprica - Starring Eric Stoltz (The Butterfly Effect, & The Rules of Attraction) stars with Esai Morales (Television series, Jericho & NYPD Blue). The story begins On the planet of Caprica as three teens explore a virtual reality world created by technology developed by Daniel Greystone (Stoltz). The three are torn between their parents vision of the world and how they want the world to be. In an act of terrorism two of the teens are killed along with everyone else who is on board a commuter train. As the story develops we discover that Stoltz's daughter had created an artificial copy of herself and left it in the virtual realty world she loved to visit. Only her copy of herself is much more than just a copy, it is the beginning of a true link between humans and artificial intelligence. ... During the movie we discover that Esai Morales is Joseph Adama who is the father of Galacticas Admiral Adama and Eric Stoltz stars as the computer genius who uses his daughters discovery to create the artificial intelligence that becomes the CYLONS. This story is riveting and the link to future events leaves any Battlestar Galactica fan wanting more. I highly recommend this movie and cannot wait for the series to be released in 2010. Rated 5 of 5 for a great story and a great link to the Battlestar Galactica series. NOTE: This movie is NOT RATED and contains some Nudity and Disturbing Images. This is done tastefully but it should be kept in mind when deciding who will watch the movie with you.

Caprica Comes through
This introduction to the world of Caprica, soon to be a regular series on SyFy, this January of 2010, took place 58 years before the Cylon war. It is as intriguing as any Sci Fi show that has been on the SyFy channel. The standards have been set pretty high and I believe that the series may keep those high production standards throughout the series. The acting is A class, McCreary's score is not just rhythmic thumping and bass drums like 3/4 of BSG's score was for 4 seasons, and the FX scenes are almost seamless. Now here's the bad news: The only thing that shocked me was 2 or 3 scenes in which early adult females (playing teens) were walking around topless and performing lesbian sex acts on each other. I don't think you saw any genitals.... maybe one of the dancers during a human ... I was shocked because this DVD I bought was the 1hr 30minute version which I thought was what aired on Sci-Fi back earlier in 2009. I watched some of the "extended cut" on SyFy's website the other night and from the first 2 minutes that I saw, before I had a buffering problem (SyFy doesn't have a good player like ABC), there was no sign whatsoever of the T & A that is on this copy I bought. How can an extended cut be less graphic than the non-extended cut? I'm thoroughly confused on that issue. So beware if you are buying this DVD for an individual under 18, even if they were a hardcore fan of "Sci Fi's" 4 season run of the new series (it was a stupid stupid move to change the station name to "SyFy" if you ask me). Even "Razor" was more tame than this Caprica DVD. "Razor" was rated "not rated" only because the actor who played a young Adama used the "real" f word. And the other strange thing was that they still used the work "FRACK" instead of the, commonly used, "other "F" word" that you can't say on any stations other than HBO, Cinemax, and Pay-Per view. They can't say the "f word" on Caprica but, they can show full T & A shots? And people think the American rating system for TV and Films isn't screwed up? Yahhh right. If you can get past the T and A....it's a great DVD; I'd even say "Superb" if it were minus the T and A. Oh....and "Cancer Man" from the X-Files plays a character in Caprica that is violently and graphically murdered. It is waaaayyy graphic....his throat is slit and air and blood are gurgling out of his throat and sprays on his nightstand beside him. Sooooo.....for me...it was a bit of a pill to swallow. I almost stopped the DVD after the 2nd sex scene came up with the teen lesbians. Was I stupid to plow through it anyway? Morally, yes. But, again....Morals are in the eye of the beholder right? That's what they say anyways. "So say we all."

Fantastic beginning to a classic which is gone too soon
This particular distribution is the unrated version of the pilot for Caprica. It shows a little more skin and has a few minor changes from the rated version and the difference is only important if you have kids viewing it. This is the beginning of a well thought out production which, for the thinker is better than Galactica. It has less action and a more thought provoking premise. It should be on your must have list if you are a SF fan. Aside from explaining the underlying reason for the war, which is worth the price in and of itself, I found the casting of the actors especially well done. It is all just right. Unfortunately this masterpiece of television is supposedly canceled so this will become a collectors item unless the powers that be of the SyFi channel comes to their senses and ... GREAT show!
If this is what Caprica will be like when it comes to the sci-fi (or syfy by then) channel in 2010, then I'm aboard. Not a space based show like its big brother, Battlestar Galactica, but a drama about what life was like about 60 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica happened and how the Cylons came to be. If you are Galactica fan, then you absolutely owe it to yourself to watch this awesome 90 minutes of pure entertainment. The only downside is the fact that after watching it, you'll have to wait about a year or so before the actual series starts broadcasting. Also, this is the UNRATED version so I'm sure that some of the scenes (topless dancers) won't be in the broadcast version.
