The Canon Speedlite 270EX II Flash is a very compact, very lightweight, and feature-packed flash unit that is capable of shooting wirelessly using a remote control. It can be combined easily with Canon EOS digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras that have a commander or master function ability. The Canon 270EX can also function as a slave flash unit that increases its value for flash photographers. The Canon Speedlite 270EX II has the ability to bounce light vertically on walls or other similar surfaces up to 90 degrees. This feature makes the Speedlite 270EX a very versatile tool for light setups that helps shooters in creating more complex images. The 270EX II model along with the 580EX II, 430EX II, and 320EX II are all part of the Canon EX Speedlite series’ lineup. Canon EX Speedlites work with all the cameras under the Canon EOS DSLR series and also in some digital cameras that have a flash shoe mount, such as the Canon PowerShot cameras. The Canon Speedlite 270EX II has a tilt-head function that can move from 0 to 60 to 75 to 90 degrees. This is one of the advantages of the 270EX II over the other previous versions of the Canon Speedlite flash units. The Canon 270EX II is lighter in weight compared to its predecessors after an improvement on design only required 2 AA alkaline (LR6) batteries to be used. The silent charging feature is also a big plus for this flash unit. In addition, the recycling time for the Canon Speedlite 270EX II is around 0.1-3.9 seconds on normal flash and approximately 0.1-2.6 seconds on quick flash. The Canon Speedlite 270EX II also features a Tele Function that helps in making easier adjustments. Using this feature, the photographer can light up a scene to his or her satisfaction easily since the guide number and angle of illumination can be manipulated easily. The 270EX II has four native functions, such as auto power off, quick flash with continuous shot, slave auto power off timer, and slave auto power off cancel. These basic Speedlite functions can be easily accessed through the EOS DSLR’s menu. The Canon Speedlite 270EX II does not have a master or commander function. It can, however, serve as a remote flash trigger for the built-in flash on the camera but with a two-second delay. Using a small button at the side of the 270EX II’s body, the Speedlite turns into a wireless remote controller compatible with EOS DSLRs that works smoothly with Canon’s RC-6 controllers. The 270EX II’s Slave function can be controlled by the built-in controller in the camera or by an external controller. This slave function uses light and line of sight or through strategic positioning of the unit on areas. The Speedlite has a dedicated switch to activate and deactivate the slave function easily. A two-position zoom feature is also very handy since this helps to focus the Speedlite’s light on a subject. The Canon Speedlite 270EX ii weighs 155 grams. It measures approximately 2.6 inches by 2.6 inches by 3.0 inches.

    good overall, not way better than the in-camera one

    beautiful flash for small non-SLR body like that of a G series. its response to dark interiors is as good as the in-camera flash of the G12 (for example) or even better depending on how well you adjust the settings. I use it to overcome the shadow caused by the presence of the FA DC58B adapter that blocks part of the light out of the in-camera flash; the 270EX is very good as a attached equipment to your small size powershot particularly when you expect the performance is around that of a 2 AA batteries (control on the 270ex is limited to OFF/ON button), and that many flashes would be too bulky (when mounted) thus defeating the purpose of having a G series. Along with the RD2000C this flash would be well-recommended although I noticed that shooting in interiors does not necessarily yield ...

    Nice Improvement over Built-In Flash

    The build-in flash on a Canon EOS Rebel T5 SLR works great since it is obviously tied to the internal computer system. It has several short comings: 1) It's weak; 2) It creates a shadow with some lenses; 3) there is no capability to bounce the flash off the ceiling; 4) It has a fixed light pattern designed for wide angle lenses; 5) there's no provision for softer lighting so the shadows are always harsh. The 270EX speedlight solves all of these problems. It's brighter and sits about 2 inches higher thus working with most lenses. It can be set for wide angle or telephoto. The flash can be aimed forward, up, or angled to bounce flash. A lamp defuser can be attached to reduce harshness. And, most important, it still works in conjunction with the camera's computer.     Great value compact flashgun, versatile and easy to use

    This is an excellent compact flashgun for Canon bodies. Easy to use with automatic TTL metering and the added versatility of zoom and bounce. Conveniently small to keep in the camera bag with a couple of spare AA batteries. A substantial improvement on the consumer DSLR pop-up flash, and essential for a 5D3 with no built in flashgun. Battery life is good and recycle time is reasonably fast with good batteries. My only small complaint is the lack of manual trigger like I'm used to on all my other flashguns, but for what this is designed for it's not a big deal.

    BEST! item i have purchased!

    This is one of the best flashes i have ever owned.. Canon did a really great job. The flash is super light weight. The pouch is great, it has the inner fleece in side to prevent scratches to the body. The battery life is great I use 2 rechargeble Energizers. The range of the flash for me is perfect as I shoot super close range of people. The swivel action on the head is exactly what I needed.
