Appreciating Will Rogers
This delightful documentary on celebrated humorist Will Rogers is, by far, the best of a half-dozen or so film treatments on this underappreciated American icon. At the peak of his depression-era popularity, the cowboy/lariat artist/vaudeville performer/newspaper columnist/film and radio star was the most celebrated American of his time. To much of contemporary America, he's a vague figure but after viewing this crisp and thoroughly entertaining film, beautifully narrated by Bob Hope, one cannot help but be taken in by the Rogers' profound wisdom, humor and likability. The Rogers story is told through still photos and vintage film featuring the young performer's rise through circuses and Wild West shows to his peaks of stardom on Broadway and Hollywood. Will Rogers Charm Will Rope You In
I only knew of his older days, with the Ziegfeld Follies and his commentaries of political happenings. This dvd filled in those times from his birth in Indian Territory (Oklahoma) to his fascination with flight and his last flight with Wiley Post in 1934 in Alaska. His time in the movies may not have been too long, but his skit regarding a passport and the official saying that Will needs a birth certificate to prove he was born is one of the very rich scenes encapsulated in what seems an all too brief life. An early scene of Will as he demonstrates many of his roping tricks, are something you'll want to back-up and watch again and again. History and entertainment -- great!
This is a really first class DVD, even better than I expected. I did not know that Bob Hope was the narrator until I opened it. It's a great gift as well as personally entertaining. This company ships in top quality materials and quickly. I recommend them.
