A Powerful Emotional Film
Dalton Trumbo's "Johnny Got His Gun" is a book that when I read it I put it down twice and walked away - because what he described - war and the price Veterans pay - is deeply disturbing. I've never taken a break from a book before like that and haven't since yet I was compelled to finish his book and I am glad I did. years later I came across the film which is directed by the author and he also wrote the screenplay. Timothy Bottoms performance as Joe the main character of the film is stellar. Jason Robards as Joe's father is a proud American who supports Joe's going to war. I've seen literally dozens of war films yet there is no movie like "Johnny Got His Gun". it is disturbing, heart wrenching and beautifully told. it is for me a film I will never forget and I intend to watch it again ... The movie that inspired Metallica's ''One''
For anyone who likes Metallica's 1988 song, ''One'', this movie is a real treat. I 'discovered' this movie through the song when my friend showed me the music video & told me parts of it were from a movie. fast forward some five or so years later, with the song & video still prominent in my head; i wanted to find this movie & watch it at long last. It only took a couple minutes to find out the title & go to ebay & to my delight find it on dvd. It has just been released this year (2009) yet I've never seen it in any stores. The movie was actually made in 1971, but has just been released on dvd now. Maybe the subject matter is a bit too touchy for the retailers to bother with... but it's a movie everyone should see anyway. ... It deals with a soldier (Joe) who is hit with a bomb at the end of WW1, and he wakes up in total darkness, wondering what's happened to him. He slowly discovers he's left with no face (eyes, nose, teeth & tongue all gone)and all his limbs are also gone, leaving him with virtually no way to communicate with the outside world that believes he's brain damaged & incapable of any thought or feeling. much of the movie goes into flashbacks of joe's life before the tragic injury, as well as some 'dreamlike' scenes where he talks to Jesus. Although all his senses are gone, he can still feel vibration whenever someone walks into his room; and he eventually remembers he knows morse code, so he begins to 'tap' it with his head to show them that he is still there and can think & feel. It definitely makes you want to go learn morse code, just in case you wind up in the same situation as ''Joe''. Anyway the dvd has several extras, such as behind the scenes footage, interview with the guy who played Joe made just this year, a 1940 radio broadcast of the story, and the Metallica music video, among other features. the movie is rated pg, so it is suitable for all ages, though I'm not sure the kids would enjoy it as much as adults. Have them watch it when they get older and can understand the subject matter. The parts that take place in the real world are black & white, the scenes that take place in Joe's mind are in color. Very good movie that everyone should see at least once. Me, I'll watch it many more times yet.

If you have already seen this movie, you know how intense it is. I purchased this for my adult children to view because i wanted them to experience it. They seemed a bit confused by it all, disappointed in the "black and white" scenes and the lack of today's sound and action effects. They seemed to miss the whole point! EVERYBODY should view this movie! I saw this movie A LONG TIME AGO, and it has stayed in my mind all these many years. It is a haunting portrayal of a life lost to the war....a life that had so much potential. War doesnt just kill men, it tries to kill the souls of those who survive....watch it with an open mind!If you have already seen this movie, you know how intense it is.
