If you can read one narrative from Vietnam, read this.
This is the best helicopter narrative from Vietnam. Some feel it is the best narrative of any kind from the entire war. Really, all the rest concerning the helicopter war take their cues from this one. If there's one to read, this is it. The author is simply a better stylist, and it's a fast-paced read as a result. He seamlessly weaves emotional content into his harrowing adventures, and as a result, this book is authentically human. This is one to learn from, and his mixed feelings about the war in Vietnam (while being a complete hero) are still relevant and current for a student of history.This is the best helicopter narrative from Vietnam. Chickenhawk
Chickenhawk is a well written personal account of the helicopter war in Vietnam. This book turned out to be much better than I anticipated. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested to understand what it was like to fly these birds in a combat zone in the 1960’s. The author captures every experience so well that it was nearly impossible for me to put down. Mr. Mason, you are a patriot. Thank you for your service and sharing your amazing and gut-wrenching personal experience. CTAChickenhawk is a well written personal account of the helicopter war in Vietnam. Vietnam. One Veterans experience
The author starts by describing his passion for flying. After achieving the rank of Warrant Officer his Vietnam experience at flying helicopters in battle zones won't let you put the book down. A real life depiction of one of the most brutal conflicts of or time awaits.

Regrettably, Mason's fate is similar to many who fought bravely, witnessed incredible suffering, and returned to be scorned by a public who did not understand why we were there and how our government failed the military. This is one man's experience in air cav, told frankly and compellingly and will be especially interesting for those who enjoy military aviation and helicopters, especially.As a fan of Vietnam war drama, this is a must-read.
