Nobody does postmodern like the French!
I bought this DVD because I was looking for a film version of The Nightingale for my 4 y/o granddaughter, and I couldn't believe my luck when I saw this one starring Natalie Dessay! There is no praise high enough for her great voice, but not every operatic star can act. She definitely can! She is the "voice" of the nightingale and gives a superb performance as the camera deftly cuts back and forth between her and an actual bird. Just as the original story makes a statement against mechanism when it is promulgated as better than nature, so does this version advance the argument, but it takes it to the next level, into the information age. It even goes so far as to argue against the commodification of humanity. We cannot all be barcoded, but there is a coterie of followers who just ... If you are having touble following the storyline because of the symbolism, turn on the english subtitles and you will surely understand the imagery. So, what does the 4 y/o think of this DVD? This is still her favorite (and believe me, she has a ton of Barbie princess, etc etc etc DVDs) and says her "favorie song" is the aria the fisherman sings at the beginning and end.

I love Natalie but hate the product. I Bought Rossgnoll because of Natalie. Production is far too modern for me.
