Lewis Milestone's adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's anti-war novel is a masterpiece whose power to disturb remains undiminished by the passage of time. The film stars Lew Ayres as the young Paul Bauman, who, along with a group of his teenaged classmates, are conscripted into the German army during WWI. The youths quickly realize that the patriotic hogwash they had been fed by their schoolmaster has absolutely has nothing to do with the horror they observe and experience on the front lines.

All Quiet on the Western Front
This is an excellent rendition of the novel. It develops the pathos, futility and mindless slaughter of WW1 in a very personal and intelligent manner. The cluelessness of the civilian supporters and their nationalism is also exposed brilliantly. The themes developed in this novel and brought to life in this movie are timeless and are just as relevant to our soldiers in Iraq and Afganistan as they were to the trench bound troops of WW1. Wars are not fought by the politicians who start them and the lives of young soldiers become meaningless and disposable. This is the best way to experience war; vicariously, through an intelligent, sensitive and articulate young man who managed to keep enough love of his fellow men alive to write this for us. THE version to be seen!
This is THE version of "All Quiet on the Western Front" that must be seen! Nothing else can compare (except the book). Note that this DVD format has had some enhancement done to the original film and was re-issued in 1999. Lew Ayres is fantastic and "gets it right". The film footage is quite dated but this adds to the realism. The DVD version seems to have some enhancements but a speaker system is unnecessary because it's still mono. A story with meaning behind it and fairly realistic of WWI from the common German infantry man point of view. Definately belongs in the library of a historian or militaria collector. Prior to family viewing, an adult should review the film because portions of it may be questionable for children (it's really more of a young adult upwards movie). This ... A great classic in good condition
I was pleased to see this classic aging well; Not only was the message current to today's anti-war themes, but it was in pretty good shape considering it's date of release. Without special effects, it felt realistic. Amazing for it's era.
