Michael Crichton's directorial debut, WESTWORLD is the direct precursor to JURASSIC PARK as the story of a technological amusement park gone out of control, with tourists becoming victims. For $1,000 a day, patrons can visit high-tech recreations of historically based mythical settings controlled by lifelike androids and synthetic environments: a Roman world that recreates tales of ancient Rome; a medieval world that recreates the legends of the Middle Ages; and Westworld, which recreates the myth of the classic Western. Two Chicago businessmen, Martin (Richard Benjamin) and Blane (James Brolin), spend their vacation in Westworld, where they live out their fantasies of the Old West mythology: chaotic barroom brawls, random love with beautiful prostitutes, and a violent jailbreak during which they shoot the local sheriff. But the complex technology that supports these fabricated worlds develops complicated syndromes faster than the scientists behind the scenes can resolve them. Soon the entire resort breaks down into chaos, and the androids turn hostile on the visiting tourists. WESTWORLD is both a retread on classic science fiction themes and a precocious critique of the false values and artificiality of the encroaching mass culture.

Basic story line is that now in the mid 1970's everybody is so hi-tech that ordinary vacations have grown boring. But now, a new company has come along to fill that niche, that once in a lifetime vacation where you can choose to either go back into the old west to "West World" and be a cowboy, or a gunfighter, or you can go to "Medieval World" and joust with knights in the time of King Arthur. Here you can live the existence of a medieval nobleman, where every wench is yours for the taking, and nothing is illegal to you. Or, you can go to Roman World, and live the lifestyle of Julius Caesar or that of a Roman soldier. The best thing about all of these different experiences, is that it is all perfectly safe. "Have We Got a Vacation For You! Peter Martin (Benjamin), a first-timer, and his friend John Blane (Brolin), who has visited previously, visit West World. One of the attractions in West World is the Gunslinger (Brynner), a robot programmed to instigate gunfights. The firearms issued to the park guests have temperature sensors that prevent them from shooting humans or anything else living, but allow them to "kill" the "cold blooded" androids. The Gunslinger's programming allows guests to outdraw it and "kill" it, always returning the next day for a new duel. The technicians running the programs for the guests notice problems beginning to spread like an infection among the androids: the robots in Roman World and Medieval World begin experiencing an increasing number of breakdowns and systemic failures. The Chief Supervisor tells the technicians, "We aren't dealing with ordinary machines here. These are highly complicated pieces of equipment, almost as complicated as living organisms. In some cases, they've been designed by other computers. We don't know exactly how they work." Soon, the malfunctions begin to become more numerous and cascade into real problems. In West World, Blaine gets bitten by an android rattlesnake. When a guest in Medieval World makes sexual advances towards a woman, instead of submitting, she refuses his advances and soon after, another guest is killed by a robotic Black Knight in a sword fight. The resort's supervisors, in increasing desperation, try to regain control by shutting down power to the entire park, but this traps them in the control rooms, unable to turn the power back on while the robots run amok on reserve power. Martin and Blane, passed out drunk after a bar-room brawl, wake up in West World's bordello, unaware of the breakdown. When the Gunslinger challenges the two men to a showdown, Blane treats the confrontation as a typical amusement until the robot shoots and actually hits him, mortally wounding him. Martin runs for his life as the robot as the robot follows him. Martin flees to the other areas of the park, but finds only dead guests, damaged robots. and a panicked technician who is shortly shot by the Gunslinger. Martin climbs down through a manhole in Roman World to the underground control area and discovers that the resort's technicians suffocated when the ventilation system shut down. The Gunslinger stalks Martin through the underground corridors. Eventually, Martin successfully ambushes the robot and throws acid in it's face. He escapes, and apparently is the sole survivor. Good movie for 1973.
