The United States has long considered Latin America its backyard, with often brutal and tragic consequence for the peoples south of the Rio Grande. In this book, renowned academics James Petras and Henry Veltmeyer examine the forms taken of late by US imperialism in its bid to project the interests of the US capitalist class throughout the region. They begin their probing analysis by delving into the changing nature of imperialism in the context of an increasingly global capitalism, and then turn their focus to the concrete economic and political dynamics of imperial power in Latin America. As these efforts at domination have always engendered resistance from the subjugated, Petras and Veltmeyer conclude with a case study on the relationship between the United States and Venezuela-the country, they argue, which has assumed leadership in the anti-imperialist struggle.
