Latest version of the historic book Robin Hood. This was perhaps the most enjoyable and realistically believable version to date. The historical accuracy is also much more believable with many similarities to real accounts of this time. Russell Crow plays the part of Sir Robert Loxley, and Max Von Sydow is the senior Loxley. Kate Blanchette is Lady Marian Loxley, Robert's wife. In reality, Crow is an archer in King Richard's service who happens, along with three of his soldier associates, to hear of Richard's death in battle. Fearing that escape will be impossible if they don't leave immediately, they take off heading back to England. They know that by tomorrow, hundreds of other soldiers will do the same, so now is the time, before escape becomes impossible. The real Sir Robert Loxley, ... The real Sir Robert Loxley, was King Richard's best friend and was charged with returning his crown to England along with the news of his death. Severely wounded in an ambush of French marauders led by a traitorous Englishman, he is left in a ditch to die. Crow and his associates come upon the ambushers stripping the dead English of valuables and kill most of them, but their leader escapes. Crow finds Loxley clinging to life, and is asked to return his family sword to his father, and deliver the message of his love and sorrow for going off to the crusades against his will. With the king's crown and plunder taken from all, there is a plan to impersonate Loxley and the other Knights who were returning the crown. This way they could get back to England, return the crown, and disappear as fairly wealthy men. Once in England, the crown returned, and King John crowned the new king, they take off. Crow, whose real name is Robin Longstride, decides to return the sword because of old memories that he just can't quite understand. When he arrives at Nottingham, he meets Marian, and Sir Walter, Robert's father, and returns the sword and dying man's message. Sir Walter offers a proposition to Longstride to stay on as his returned son, Sir Robert Loxley, acting like Marian's husband. According to the law, when Walter dies, all of his possessions would pass to the State, not to Marian, because she has no husband. He also tells him of his history and his father's noble plans to unite the Nobility under a charter that guaranteed freedom and justice to all people of England. Aside from this, the new King's best friend, Godfried, who is the traitor, aligned with King Philip of France, is placed in the highest and most trusted position of power, just under John. Godfried is trying to stir up civil war in England so that the French can divide the English Noblemen and take control of England. Longstride ends up leading the English in the fight against the French invaders. John knows that his friend has betrayed him, and promises the Nobelmen that if they fight the French, he will see that a charter is written and swears his word. The battle is won, and Crow kills Godfried, but when the time comes to honor his pledge, John reneges and declares Robin Longstride an outlaw, and sentences him to death if captured. He and Marian, her lands and wealth forfeited, now move to hide with the other cast outs in Sherwood Forest. This was an enjoyable movie.

Good Action/Adventure Film
This version of Robin Hood has a few twists that traditionalists may not care for. When the movie beings we find Robin Longstride fighting along with his friends in the French Countryside where King Richard is ransacking French villages for food and whatever his men can carry as they head back to England after the Crusades. After an accident where the King gets hurt, Robin is held as a prisoner and put in shackles. After he is freed he makes his way home and finds Robin of Loxley dying on the side of the road after being ambushed by French soldiers, he assumes his name and status and heads back to England. From there the story takes a few twists and turns and eventually Robin Longstride becomes Robin of Loxley. This version of the story was somewhat different from any of the other Robin ... This version of Robin Hood has a few twists that traditionalists may not care for. The difference were enough to make me wonder why this was not made as a stand-a-lone movie and keep Robin Hood out of the story. Cate Blanchett role as Lady Marian (in all the other stories she was called Maid Marian) is much more politically correct by todays standards. She is stronger of will, she is basically the head of the household and she fights and cusses and everything you would expect from a good strong 21st century women. However, this story takes place in the 13th century and women during that time had no such roles and if she had even tried to do any of the things she is portrayed doing in this movie she would have been, at the least, shackled and put in her place. I am all for giving women stronger roles in movies, but in a period movie, where it is supposed to represent the 13th century, it is just not possible to do this and still have the character be in the proper time period. That being said. I actually liked her in this movie. She gave a great performance. Cast Includes: Russell Crowe takes his turn as Robin Hood (he plays both Robin of Loxley and Robin Longstride) Cate Blanchett takes the role of Lady Marian Mark Strong plays Sir Godfrey (one of King John's henchmen) Mark Lewis Jones is Thomas Longstride Mark Addy is Friar Tuck William Hurt is William Marshal Jonathan Zaccaï is Philip II of France and Max von Sydow plays Sir Walter Loxley Overall I would say this was a good movie. It was entertaining (although a bit long) and it kept my interest throughout the entire movie. I would recommend this to anyone who loves a good action/adventure movie.

Good film, too long & bit confusing
I was looking forward to this film. Been a fan of Russell's for over 10 years. You can see Gladiator in this film. A couple of similar scenes. The 5th teaming up of Russell & Ridley. 3 Oscar winners with Russell, Cate and…..where did they dig up William Hurt? His career was over in the 1980’s & he NEVER deserved his Oscar when it SHOULD have went to Harrison for "Witness". It is a good film BUT we knew from the publicity press the film would NOT follow normal story lines for the Robin Hood character. I found the storyline to get confusing. Spoiler……Russell & Cate do NOT meet until an hour into the story. Was a long film. Scenes like when we meet the John character with another woman other than his wife were unnecessary. Cheap DVD,. A little-known Gem of a Movie
Ridley Scott's offering Robin Hood is an amazing interpretation of the story and the one that seems most likely to be historically accurate absolutely love the movie entertaining throughout when I ordered it on eBay the price was right and the disc was in Great condition

A new take on the Robin Hood story
This is a new version of Robin Hood. He is still protecting the weak from the over-bearing nobles, but King Richard and Robin of Locksley are killed by treachery at the beginning of the movie and "Robin Hood" is a lowly bowman who takes Locksley's name and mission to get back to England. There, circumstances and his feelings of honor force him into helping the peasants, but NOT by robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. This new Robin Hood shows conditions in 14th century England much better than several of the earlier Hollywood versions and is very interesting. There is a fair amount of action and the building romance between Robin and Marion (a widow, not a young maiden) keep the whole thing going. The English political situation in the background and the events which eventually ... This is a new version of Robin Hood.
