Product Information

A successful psychologist in 1970s Chicago, Bob Hartley (Bob Newhart) was also the straight man for the cast of wacky characters who surrounded him in this classic sitcom. Providing guidance and a soundboard to a host of eccentric patients, Bob lived with his schoolteacher wife, the elegant Emily. His next door neighbor, Howard Borden, was a childlike, divorced airplane pilot who spent much of his time dropping in at the Hartley residence. Bob's secretary Carol was a somewhat loopy, though surprisingly insightful, wisecracker, and also worked for Bob's best friend, orthodontist Jerry Robinson, who worked down the hall. In the show's first season, Emily attempts to get over her fear of flying, the Hartleys deal with the questions of children and home-ownership, Carol considers moving in with her new boyfriend, and Jerry tries to go on a date with Howard's 22-year-old sister. Other episodes include "Tennis, Emily?" "I Want to Be Alone," "The Two Loves of Dr. Hartley," and "Bum Voyage."

    Not for Me

    I already had Seasons 2 and 3, which I enjoyed, and then bought Season 1 to round out my collection. However, in Season 1, the show had not yet found its way. There are some inappropriate remarks, and Bob and Emily are very argumentative and sarcastic. Bob is overly authoritarian, and Emily whines a lot. As of Season 2, Bod and Emily are portrayed as more supportive of each other -- still some tension between them, but more within the realm of true comedy. Personally, I would skip Season 1 and start with Seasons 2 and 3 -- which are basically commentary on balancing marriage and career in the changing times of the early 1970's.

    Great show from the 1970s

    Bob Newhart features the best marriage in TV -- Bob and Emily (played by the lovely Suzanne Pleshette). All of the characters are likable and work well together. The humor derives from real-life situations and is consistently funny. Irony is used generously. Fun to see the awful '70s hair, clothes, and furnishings. A very enjoyable show.

    Dead pan Bob brings in the laughs!

    For those of you that don't know Bob Newhart, he's probably one of the best dead pan comics ever. His sad Basset Hound looks are a perfect combination for a witty comic style. Bob plays a psychologist & his patients offer many wonderfully funny situations. But they are only part of the story as Bob shares office space with a somewhat hair brained receptionist, an orthodontist & a urologist all of whom offer up comic relief. that's still not all as Bob's home life also offers comedic situation from his emotional do gooder wife & his zany neighbors. The cast is a good one! Vetran actress Suzanne Pleshette plays Bob's wife Emily, Peter Bonerz (who better known as a director for such series as Friends, Home Improvement, Frasier, Murphy Brown & Just shoot Me as well as Bob Newhart) is ...

    the bob newhart show was great.

    the bob newhart show was great. about a professional psychologigst and his school teacher wife. the show mostly takes place in either bob's chicago apt or on the office floor where he worked. everything takes place within bob's life in these 2 settings. bob newhart was big in the realm of dry humor. not slapstick, lowbrow, crude/rude, or making fun of other people. the cast had people that were neighbors, patients, and people that worked in his office building. most had little querks, like in real life. the bob newhart show took place in the 70's and it appears that way. just like 'the mary tyler moore show'. in fact the two shows not only both appeared on Sat. night but they were very much alike. so, if you like 'the mary tyler moore show' you'll probably like 'the bob newhart ...
