This Recorder Rocks
Yeah, it's a Tascam which automatically says a lot. The build quality is great, the specs are great, and it actually meets them. With that said, if you want to covert your LP's, Reel to Reels, and Cassettes (and I guess 8 tracks too if you had them) this is the way to do it. First, you are going to want to have a spare computer keyboard laying around. And it actually works with one. You can title all of your tracks directly at the front of the unit rather than having to do it on a computer. You can enter the artist and album title and the individual track titles. Sure you can do it from the remote also, but it's search for the first letter then enter, search for the second letter then enter.... Get a PS-2 (that's the little round plug) computer keyboard ... Get a PS-2 (that's the little round plug) computer keyboard and get with the program. The Koss unit I had bought previously wouldn't work with a keyboard. You had to record the disk, then come to the computer to title the tracks or live life with it saying track 1, track 2, etc. You are going to want to read the manual. Make sure you get one. The unit isn't "readily self evident" how to make it do everything. There are menus and sub menus. If you're one of the people who always let their VCR flash 12:00, this unit is not for you. There is quite a lot of setup involved. Once it's set up, it's awesome and you won't have to do it again, but be prepared to read the manual, set up the unit, play with it for a bit, then adjust the settings before packing the manual away. With that said, once you have it setup, it does most stuff automatically and very easily. It for instance auto-detects the beginning of the audio and starts recording. It auto-detects track changes and changes track numbers. It asks you if you want to finalize your disk before you remove it from the recorder. I've got almost 1000 albums to transfer over to CD and ultimately to MP3, and anything that can make the process faster I'm all in favor of. The CDRW also accepts inputs from just about anything (except a magnetic phono cartridge directly) and has outputs to just about anything, and while all of the outputs are always on, the inputs can be switched so you can have multiple inputs hot and still record what you intended to record (like with and without an equalizer on some of the more "used" albums. This recorder also does not require "AUDIO" CD's and CDRW's. It will work with good old standard stuff. This saves a bunch of time and money, and you can get blanks anywhere. There is a list in the manual of the "recommended" brands and types. Believe it or not, you can tell a difference. I'd have never believed it before this. Not that the "non-recommended" blanks don't work, but you can if you listen carefully tell a difference. For those of you old enough to understand, it's kind of like the difference between recycled and virgin vinyl on albums. I bought the Koss recorder a couple of years ago and intended to start this project. After a few dozen tries, I realized that the Koss was less expensive, but you paid for it dearly when you had to use it for multiple recordings a day. Bottom line, the Tascam is solidly built, managable to program the first time if you take your time, and will reward you with fabulous recordings with minimal effort. I may actually get rid of the old reel to reel recorder now that I have this.

Solid rack mount CD recorder.
After the usual internet investigating, I purchased this unit for the purpose of audio recording in our small church. The setup was fairly straight forward. Attend to your input levels, put a blank CD in, hit record, then play. Hit stop when your done. Finalize the disc, label it, your ready for next week. That's all I've done with it. Of course, I could get more involved with data input and so forth. As others have noted, this is a solid feeling, quality rack mounted device and does more than what I have used it for. I bought mine from Sweetwater Sound on 11/21/12 for $299.99, free shipping, followup phone calls and emails from nice people. Candy in the (well packed) shipping box. Sweet! Not sure why others charge $399.99. If you just need basic CD recording from normal input ... This Recorder was chosen because it was cost effective, and reliable.
Our Church uses two, each week to Record the Sermons, and Special Music. The CD-RW900SLs can stay in the "Pause" Mode for an extended Period of time, and both set to start Recording Simultaneously, with one IR Remote. The only Option that they do not have, is an AES Digital Input. The Option that is very Useful, is the ability to use a PC Keyboard to add Text to the CDs. I would rate it 4.5 out of 5, because of the lack of the AES Digital input.Our Church uses two, each week to Record the Sermons, and Special Music. Excellent Product...
I decided to buy the item because the CD player (I have already had to replace one) slash burner quit working on my computer. However, I was unable to use the burner to burn CDs but used it monitor play back... I liked the fact that you could adjust the volume for each channel, but because I am OCD, I think that you should be able to also have the input levels to be exactly the same (if you are monitoring or burning a commercially produced CD).I decided to buy the item because the CD player (I have already had to replace one) slash burner quit working on my computer.
