Product Information

The bestselling story of survival and our powerful bond with man's best friend, in the aftermath of the nation's most notorious animal cruelty case. Featuring a new Afterword with updates on the Vick dogs. Animal lovers and sports fans were shocked when the story broke about NFL player Michael Vick's brutal dog-fighting operation. But what became of the fifty-one dogs who survived? As acclaimed writer Jim Gorant reveals, their story is the truly newsworthy aspect of this case. The Lost Dogs traces the effort to bring Vick to justice and turns the spotlight on these infamous pit bulls, which were saved from euthanasia by an outpouring of public appeals coupled with a court order that Vick pay nearly a million dollars in "restitution" to the dogs. As an ASPCA-led team evaluated each one, they found a few hardened fighters, but most were lovable, friendly creatures desperate for compassion. In The Lost Dogs , we meet these amazing animals, many of whom now live in loving homes and work in therapy programs. The Lost Dogs exposes the terrible practice of dog fighting and shows us that even after being subjected to heartbreaking abuse, above all, a dog still wants to be man's best friend.

" The Lost Dogs shows us that goodness can be found in the places where we may least expect it." The Christian Science Monitor, Jim Gorant goes beyond the headlines of Michael Vick and the Bad News Kennels to richly tell the rest of the story: how these amazing dogs, in the wake of such brutality, help bring out the best in the human spirit., " The Lost Dogs has the quality of a page-turner as it chronicles the entire story, in all its upsetting detail, of the dogs' rescue and re-entry into the world." Los Angeles Times, Jim Gorant provides a powerful narrative that is, at times, heartbreaking, but also illuminating and inspirational. • A difficult read but a totally necessary book

This was like viewing a train wreck, a horrific scene but you can't look away. Gorant told the story with the thoroughness and arm's length detachment of a good journalist, yet it was clear that his heart and soul were irreparably affected. If such a story could be told with balance, this one was. I believe that every living being has a purpose in life, and the dogs that suffered at the hands of Monster Vick and his cohorts did not die in vain. Dog fighting has no place whatsoever in an enlightened society. This story is the brightest light yet to shine in the recesses of Hell. That is the first step in the long journey to irradicate this atrocity. Those dogs may have been anonymous in life, but are heroes in death.

  • too too sad for me. I couldn't read past page ? 10ish. I CRIED ALL NITE.

Honestly, I read maybe 10 pages and then I threw it out. I cried and cried thinking of Jane being raped and impregnated over and over till she lost her mind. And the story with such detail on the 2 little red dogs. When the man came to get one...from afar pooch was all happy and excited, until he got leashed up. He felt the mans seriousness, and knew he was not going for a fun walk. Instesd he was brought upstsirs to the fighting room. The aithor detailed this scary room so well I could actually see it. I could smell the death, the blood, and torture that happened in that room. Then men forcing the 2 little red dogs to start to hurt eachother. When they proved to not be good fighters...not strong, or entertaining they were first thrown down the stsirs, and then denied good and water....I ...

  • A necessary read.

An excellent story that all animal lovers should read. Although heartbreaking at times, it also is very rewarding and uplifting to read how the Vick's dogs were rehabilitated and became the "Vicktory Dogs". Especially important to read if you love or fear/don't understand Pit Bulls. They are truly incredible dogs! The author tells the story in an accurate and honest manner. I couldn't put the book down and am now reading it a second time. Thanks for helping to educate the general public on the misconception of Pitbulls!!

  • straight to the heart and soul highly recomend

I love this book I had heard about the Vick dogs when Vick was sentenced to do time in jail for dogfighting.I also heard from the dogs from Best friends animal shelter in Utah but always wondered how they where before during and after the trial. This books really made me cry and showed me that even with all the bad that happened to them they managed to get through it it showed determination, patience and love can save anyone even the lost ones.I highly recommend this book it opens you up to what dog fighting is all about the ugly side of it and the victims of that abuse.

  • The illness in human nature

This book disturbed me but I’m glad I read it it is amazing how the general public can continue to look up to a sports star that is a monster And how a huge company like Nike will continue to promote him for money
