Product Information

An innovative adaptation of Ursula K. Le Guin's futuristic science-fiction masterpiece about a man named George Orr (Davison) with the incredible power to literally make his dreams come true. The unpredictability of this "gift" is a serious hindrance on George's life, leading to his grave desire to be rid of it. However, his psychiatrist Dr. Haber (Conway) has different plans for George's powers and hypnotically convinces him to use this gift for the benefit of mankind. Although the doctor may have good intentions, messing with George's mind can lead to horrifying consequences. Presented by PBS.

  • A great rare treat

DVDs of this film are rare, so I couldn't pass it up! I actually saw the original broadcast on PBS in 1980 but I was too young at the time to really get it. If you like thought-provoking scifi, you'll dig this one. The extra features included in the disc such as the interview with Ursula K. LeGuin are great too. And seeing the old PBS ID at the end was a great trip down memory lane, as that was part of my childhood.

  • Lathe of Heaven (DVD)

Even though I've seen this movie rated as only 2 stars in the past, it's always been one of my favorite movies. I believe it aired on PBS in the early 80's. They say right on this DVD that the original tapes of that first release were lost and what they had to go with to create this DVD made for a less than perfect quality. However, I was pleased with the DVD. It matched the original quite well. I noticed a word of dialog here and there may have been different but I wasn't sure, I just had a feeling. But I believe that in one scene a whole line was left out. I'm doing this from memory but I believe it goes something like this: Scene with George Orr and Dr. Haber on this DVD: Dr. Haber: "You're going to let me poke around and see what's causing these bad dreams of yours. I assume ...

  • A little known sci-fi gem

A rare movie made for PBS. Delivers very large ideas on a slim budget. It doesn't have the production values of say a Star Wars movie but the ideas are pretty original. The dvd doesn't have the greatest quality picture especially at first but it gets better. (The digital version was probably made from an inferior copy.) The story gets more engrossing as the movie progresses. If you're looking for an action packed film this is not it. It's more of a brain teaser.

  • Thought-provoking, classic sci-fi with a twist

One of my all-time favorite classics, Lathe of Heaven may look dated now and a bit cheesy to some. Those accustomed to dazzling CGI & blockbuster sci-fi epics might have difficulty appreciating this modest film. But LoH offers something the big-budget productions often lack- it makes you think. The story's the thing here, not the visuals.. which consist mainly of one psychedelic, disco light sequence (back when people thought lasers made for really cool, state-of-the-art special effects.) This movie was filmed entirely on location in Dallas TX, taking advantage of the highly futuristic architecture of that city. With no artificial sets, the film makers have skillfully created an entirely believable, future-world which is still impressive some 25 years later. The plot explores many ...

  • Great story that exceeds the limitations of its medium.

I saw this film on PBS when it first aired, and I thought it was one of the greatest films ever. Based on Ursula K. LeGuin's book, it was an intriguing story brought to life. Audio and video quality and the screenplay are WAY last century, and, remastered or not, it looks and sounds murky on current state of the art equipment. Still it was lovely to see it again.
