Saint's Row: A GTA Forgery, but FUN!!!
First off, I want to say that everyone who has played Grand Theft Auto, has to admit that Saint's Row is borderline plagiarism. Nevertheless, it is always fun to steal cars, rob stores, and start gang wars with absolutely no real world consequences. Pros: The Mapping System - Unlike GTA, SR gives you the ability to set way points so that you can easily find the way to our destination. Granted, this way point system is flawed because it doesnt see shortcuts, and it only goes with the flow of traffic. It is a great "upgrade" from GTA though Total Roaming Freedom - From the beginning of the game you are free to roam he entire map. Your Cell Phone - While its functional uses are limited to calling homies, cabs, EMTs, and entering cheat codes, it is funny and a unique ... Cons: It's just like GTA. While "Urban Mayhem" genre games are fun, the all lack originality. Little changes here and there make Saint's Row just different enough from the GTA series that it is worth buying and playing. It's too easy - The game is rated as "medium" difficulty, but it is so forgiving by regenerating health, it really should be labeled "easy". I bought it to see for myself how much different and alike it was from GTA. I think that if you enjoyed GTA, then Saint's Row won't let you down, just don't expect complete differences. I completely recommend buying at playing it through, and if you are like me, right after you beat it it will be listed for sale on eBay.

Saints Row is a Rip-off, but a damn good one

While originality points should be taken away from Volition (Red Faction 1+2, Descent Freespace), they have definitely proven themselves as superior developers. The Red Factions were both very good and introduced the ability to completely change the environment and blow holes in nearly anything. Someone please copy this! As it is a must for nearly any FPS game. Anyway getting back to Saints Row…in many respects it is better than GTA and my brother and I constantly found ourselves saying, “Wow that’s way better than GTA…Sweet!” so if you like GTA this is for you. If you hated GTA’s controls and thought it was overrated (That’s me) then this game is ... Saints Row has better graphics, controls, about the same story, better lasting appeal and multiplayer modes, and only suffers from a much worse sound and radio selection. This game is big and I’m not going to be able to get into every aspect, but nearly everything that worked in GTA is in this game and everything that didn’t has been fixed or dropped. Gameplay: 9/10 Pros: GTA take notice and for Grand Theft 4 please introduce a free aiming system like the one in Saints Row. How frustrating was the lock-on firing system in GTA? How many times did you beat a mission by luck or die because of awful controls? Too many, luckily Saints Row gives you full control of where to shoot with a free aim system on the right stick. It makes all the urban mayhem that much more fun. You also have to mention Saints Row’s excellent story progression where you have to earn respect in order to take on missions. How do you earn respect? Drug Trafficking, Insurance Fraud, Hostages, Stealing and Pawning merchandise, Being a hitman, Demolition Derbies, Escort missions, Snatching up Hoes, etc. (I’m sure I’m missing a few). Some of these modes are incredibly fun and as you progress up the story missions, the respect levels get harder as well. Cons: Gameplay is a shameless copy of GTA and lacks some of the features that Rockstar developed over their 3 games: No Motorcycles, No Parachuting, Flying, etc. The story is also more focused on Gangs and City life so the city of Stillwater is not nearly as diverse as the world of San Andreas, which is a shame since the rural countryside and different cities really made Andreas shine. Graphics: 8.5/10 Pros: The graphics really shame GTA and show that Rockstar will have no excuses for detail when the next-gen GTA is released- graffiti adorns the building which are a far cry from generic boxes and skyscrapers. There’s also no load time when you enter a building or store…just kick the door in and go! The carjacking animations are very fluid (and can be brutal- cap to the head anyone?). Oh and I forgot to mention that when you boot up the game and start up, you’ll design your criminal in a fully customizable create-a-character mode…really awesome idea and a very extensive feature. Cons: Though the draw distance puts GTA to shame, there still is some fade-in with buildings. The game lacks the graphical prowess of many Xbox 360 games…though more detailed than GTA, it is less detailed than most of the other games I’ve played for the 360. ...read the rest of the review @ http://gnadegames.blogspot.com

Saints Row, Sheer Chaos
Blowin stuff up, evading the law, and trafficing drugs and prostitutes? Where do I sign up. Similar to Grand Theft Auto, with enough differences to give GTA a run for their money. Taking from a page in GTA's playbook, you get to do missions to take gang territories. Blow stuff up and cause chaos in the game's mayhem missions, or take a fall in front of moving vehicles to make insurance claims in the fraud missions. How many games can you hit oncoming traffic, have the driver fly out on to your car, beat him up, take his guns, and then race away in his squad car?!? Gameplay is great, until it comes to driving. If you have to shoot someone while you're driving, forget about aiming and driving at the same time. It is great when you ride along in the drug trafficing missions, because ... Volition's Saints Row is an impressive game --in most respects. The core missions, side missions, the controls and flow of the game, the graphics and sound, they're all solid and smartly designed. This game feels and plays better than most, if not all, of the other GTA clones. But is it better than Rockstar's benchmark? On the whole -- Not a chance. But in very specific areas? Yes, absolutely. Saints Row is a study in how to copy a model in order to improve upon it, and Volition should get full credit for taking one of the hardest games to replicate, copying it right down to the character font, and improving upon it. Does it feel like a rip-off? Yeah. Is the harsh and often overly crude humor a step down from GTA's? Yeah. Does Volition's brash desire to show off hip-hop culture feel crass ... Volition's Saints Row is an impressive game --in most respects. The core missions, side missions, the controls and flow of the game, the graphics and sound, they're all solid and smartly designed. But Saints Row, despite its distinct lack of originality, is fun. It starts out fun and it stays fun. It gets deeper and more engaging, and the storyline and the characters come to life, and you're compelled by seeing the narrative unfold just as much as getting all of the 10- and 20-point Achievements. Saints Row offers a kick-ass online mode with at least two out of four compelling online modes totally worth your while. Hate it if you want to, snicker at its obvious me-too qualities, but don't forget to recognize impressive, kick-ass gameplay as you walk out the door.

You begin play by determining your character's appearance, and you have what seems like a limitless number of options to choose from. There are presets for different ethnicities, but you can proceed to make your character look however you want. It seems gimmicky at first, but since your physical appearance--at least your clothes--do end up having some impact on gameplay, the sheer variety during character creation is impressive. The game starts with you nearly getting caught in the cross fire of a gang war. You're saved by Julius (voiced perfectly by Keith David), the charismatic leader of a racially diverse gang called the 3rd Street ... Saints Row may look like just another Grand Theft Auto rip-off, but the rare quality of its action and presentation make it stand tall on its own merits.. And he invites you to join up. The game's introductory cutscene has a couple of lines of painfully bad dialogue in it, suggesting that Saints Row will go on to bombard you with horrible clichés and an appalling fake attitude. But, somehow, somewhere, the story gets really good. Maybe it's the expressive characters and the excellent voice performances by the likes of Michael Clarke Duncan, David Carradine, and others; or maybe it's the choreography of the cutscenes and the quality of the dialogue. It's probably all of these combined. Saints Row isn't always clever or funny, and in the end, the story will leave you hanging. Even so, for its occasional misses, the quality of the game's writing and storytelling turns out to be one of the highlights. The beginning of the game sets up how the gameplay experience itself is structured. There are several different main story arcs for you to follow, involving the Saints' war against its three rivals. Each enemy gang has its own identity, preferred vehicles, and major characters, and you may attempt to take over their turf in whatever order you wish. However, you can't just jump from one story mission to another. The game makes you earn "respect" before you can take on missions, which is mostly a contrived way of forcing you to try out the many different ancillary activities available in Saints Row, rather than just blowing through the story. This structure might seem heavy handed at first, but since there are many fairly easy and entertaining ways to earn respect in the game, it turns out to be more good than bad. The search for more respect will introduce you to some of Saints Row's many amusing minigames. Though most all of them are fun, the best ones are probably "insurance fraud," in which you must deliberately throw yourself into oncoming traffic as violently and in front of as many witnesses as possible, and "mayhem," which simply tasks you with causing as much death and destruction as possible within a certain time limit.
