The title works with the newspaper background.
It's one of the best crime dramas I've ever watched. The subject fits with what goes on in the city even today.

One of James Stewart's best performances of the true story of an innocent man wrongfully imprisoned for 40 years of killing a Chicago policeman. James Stewart plays a newspaper reporter for a Chucago newspaper who investigates a newspaper ad, Call Northside 777 if you have any information on the killing of a Chicago cop in 1933. The wrongfully guilty man, played wonderfully by Richard Conte, whose already been in prison for 12 years whose mother placed the ad & is offering a reward of $5000 for any information on the murder. She's been scrubbing floors all this time saving up for the reward. Stewart meticulously checks out clues leading him thru Chicago neighborhoods looking for any witnesses or information. Well worth your time.
Great film noir! Well written, directed and acted. And the best part is it's a true story of a mother's love and faith, and a skeptical reporter's dogged courage. Fast-paced and engaging.

PLOT: ace reporter McNeal looks up two men who have 99 years to serve and decides they are INNOCENT~ skeptical ace reporter (JIMMY STEWART) is sent to talk with jail bird (Richard Conte) who has 99 years to serve on his sentence~ an eye witness fingered him and his friend and they are up for life ~ in the murder of a policeman~ after MacNeal looks into the crime~ he writes moving articles on the crimes and the victims and the killers~ after weeks and many articles he is convinced the MEN are innocent~ the $5,000 reward the mother of Conti posts for info on the crime~ brings out a few vague clues~ down to the wire the final move to clear the men is based on a photo that is over 11 years old~ GREAT noir~ moves along very well~ Lee J. Cobb as MacNeals Boss is very good~ I GIVE THIS 5 OUT OF ... Jimmy Stewart stars in this gritty film noir from 1948. Shot in doco style it is based on a true story and is shot mostly on location in Chicago. As always Stewart is excellent in the part of the skeptical reporter. There is a great supporting cast including Lee J Cobb, Richard Conte and Helen Walker in a small role. All in all this is a great film and highly recommended :)
