A girl kneels over the grave of her murdered dog, praying for a miracle, while off in the distance, a man rides toward town on a pale horse. Clint Eastwood's PALE RIDER was the filmmaker's first Western in nearly a decade. It finds a pleasant balance between the mystical revisionism of films such as HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER and the traditional Western. Eastwood stars as the Preacher, who wanders into a dusty California town and tries to rescue a community of gold prospectors that is being terrorized by the local corporate mining operation, which is strip-mining the land. He's taken in by Hull Barrett (Michael Moriarty), who lives with Sarah Wheeler (Carrie Snodgrass) and her 14-year-old daughter, she of the murdered pooch, Megan (Sydney Penny). The Preacher is something of a blend of Eastwood's Man with No Name and the title character of George Stevens's SHANE. The story and treatment are straightforward and entertaining, and the strong performances draw the audience in. The Preacher remains a mysterious character, but in the end, as he takes on the evil mining corporation's hired guns, it's impossible not to root for him.

Thoroughly entertaining Eastwood western
Clint Eastwood returns to the Western genre after a 9-year hiatus, to produce, direct and star in "Pale Rider", a fine film with maybe some familiar qualities... This 1985 action drama has a greedy hydraulic gold mining company trying to run off a group of "tin panners" who have legal rights to their claims. By cruel bullying and threats, the evil mining company boss tries to get the group to give up and leave, thereby illegally grabbing their claims. Enter Mr. Eastwood, called "The Preacher" by the folks he helps. Here again, Eastwood's character is given no name and a mysterious background...but he proves himself up to the task of fighting off the mining company thugs and making things a little more equal. You will recognize quite a few aspects of the ... "Classic Eastwood with a Tender Side"
Great movie. Eastwood does as he always does.... has fabulous screenwrites, and superb acting skills. The casting couldn't have been better. All around grade of A+.

Excellent Eastwood western.
This is an excelent western. It has Eastwood at his best. It is the classic old western tale of a stranger with a haunted past. Eastwood, the Preacher, appears to help a small group of miners that have set up their operation in a spot the local bigshot miner wants for himself. The local bigshot uses hydro mining and believes he has a motherload waiting under the "tin pans", that he first tries to convince Eastwood of them "squatting" on his land. Lots of gritty Eastwood humor and action.This is an excelent western. It has Eastwood at his best. It is the classic old western tale of a stranger with a haunted past.
