In documentary style, Paul Greengrass' BLOODY SUNDAY, which chronicles the events of January 30, 1972 in Derry, Ireland, is filmed with gritty gray realness. Surrounding a peaceful protest march staged in contest to British laws that permitted internment without trial, the film charts the progress of the march from the night before it to the night following it. As the final organizing of the march takes place that morning, MP Ivan Cooper (James Nesbitt) rushes from the street where police barriers are being erected to his office where he fields a string of urgent phone calls. Meanwhile Major General Ford (Tim Pigott-Smith) arranges for a heavily armed troop of commandos in fatigues and face paint to be ready to intercept the march if it turns violent. A third persona, Kevin McCorry (Allan Gildea), is a young lad with a prison record who believes in the cause of the march but wants to avoid conflict and any real trouble. As the march proceeds, and chaos ensues, the British militia opens fire onto the unarmed crowds, shooting 27 and killing 13 in one of the most shocking instances of excessive force in Irish history, ending any hope of nonviolent resolution, and stoking the IRA.

Worth every penny
A great movie, if you're into history at all. Pretty factual too, in terms of what was said and done by whom and when, although, to be sure, it strongly takes the side of the victims. It was also filmed in a documentary fashion that, at least for me, was skillful enough not to get dated. The used copy played ok as well, so, a good buy.

What a powerful film.
This movie was recommended by an Irish travel book. I believe the creators of this film tried to make it true to life and make it feel as if it were a documentary of the actual day, not a recreation, or an interpretation. The footage is a bit bouncy at times, and can be hard to watch. There aren't many characters, the film isn't a Hollywood movie, and I believe that it must accurately depict the real Bloody Sunday. It is a sad story, but it’s a very true story. I learned a lot from watching it and if you want to learn more about the Troubles in Ireland then you really should watch it.This movie was recommended by an Irish travel book. I purchased this movie sight unseen after viewing Flight 93, the recent film also directed by Paul Greengrass. Greengass's using handheld cameras to create a sense of realism and immediacy. He gives us the feeling that the events we are watching are happening in realtime. His films have the feeling of documentaries. Bloody Sunday-Politically Sad!
This is a great political true story! Considering what happens here in Northern Ireland back in 1972 the story is very sad! I loved everything about this movie-even though Im not really into anything political! Seeing how Ireland had to struggle for its independance away from Englands grip & hold on them-I found very sad-what the Irish had to put up with & who can blame them for retaliating!
