Good laughs; a film that's stood the test of time.
I had last seen this film on television some forty years ago, and as a 16 year-old-kid, thought it was one of the funniest movies ever made. I bought it to see if it still was. I'm a bit more jaded now, but the movie has stood the test of time surprisingly well. It doesn't take itself seriously and still elicited some real guffaws. The film is good fun, with a pretty impressive cast of characters such as Mickey Rooney, Henry Gibson and of course, John Astin. Not as good as I remembered.
I first saw this almost 50 years ago. It was funny to me back then. Not so much today. Evil Roy and the other characters are just so evil or so goody-good that you can't relate to any of them. The characters are engaging if what you want is slapstick humor. If that's not what you're looking for, look somewhere else.

I love the movie! It was a purchase that I have been searching for years at other places. The price was very reasonable so I could not resist the buy. Evil Roy Slade is a 1972 made for TV movie with an allstar cast. John Astin,(he played Gomez Adams on the original Adams Family) has the starrin role. In this slap-stick western he plays an outlaw that nobody loved, and he tries to give up his outlaw ways after one last job. This movie is about his attempt and how it does not work out for him. Dom Deluise, Milton Berle, Penny Marshall, Mickey Rooney,Edie Adams.I love the movie! It was a purchase that I have been searching for years at other places. DON'T MISS THIS CLASSIC...ESPECIALLY ON DVD !!!!
I had first seen this movie on local TV quite a few times, then it disapeared. When I found this title again some years ago on VHS, I was forced to break a strict rule of mine and bought it BRAND NEW and at the FULL RETAIL PRICE. HEY, IT WAS WORTH IT, AND NOW IT'S ON DVD !!!! To those of you who may be interested, "EVIL ROY SLADE" is a 'must have' title if you enjoy quirky comedies. From the people who gave us "HAPPY DAYS", "LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY" and "THE ODD COUPLE"; this made for TV movie looks like a busted pilot. Too bad, it would have made a great series. In any event, its cult status hasn't suffered in the least. The story concerns the title character, the 'meanest, most despised, awful, ornery, ... AND PROUD OF IT, BY GOD !!! Unfortunatly, others don't share this opinion; especially one NELSON L. STOOL (MICKEY ROONEY), president of Western Express, whom E.R. keeps wanting to rob his properties, and therefore is seeking to have this hombre captured, with the reluctant help of retired-Marshal BING BELL (DICK SHAWN). Then, the dropdead goregous BETSY POTTER enters this picture !!! Played by dropdead goregous PAMELA AUSTIN, our hero is immediately smitten (of, course), but when asked to give up his life of crime to be with her...WEEEL ??? You would think this wouldn't be so hard a decision, BUT... I GUESS IT HAS TO BE(other wise the movie would be much shorter). AFTER ALL, Evil Roy is at the top, or rather LOW of his game as an outlaw. Also, having been abandoned as an infant, rejected by Apaches as well as wolves, his only trusted companion being his TEDDY BEAR... from his point of view his reluctance may make all kinds of sense. The movie then moves along into 1970's social points of view, as Betsy continue to urge Roy to go straight, get a job and seek psycholoical help from a doctor friend in Boston, in short making his reabilitation her own responsibility !!! MEANWHILE, the PRIME VICTIM of Evil Roy's crime spree begs to differ, wanting him at the end of a rope ASAP, and not caring the lengths they have to go to bring him in; making us wonder who is REALLY the bad guy. In a way the Coens and the Zuckers would have done MUCH BETTER with this material, but considering the CULT STATUS of this film, WHO CARES ???? ANYWAY, now that this classic is on DVD, no real fan should be without this selection in their collection.

An amusingly silly and often uproariously funny film, Evil Roy Slade tells the tale of its namesake, the most ruthless outlaw in the Old West (played by John Astin- Addams Family, Killer Tomatoes, the Frighteners, Night Court) from his days raising himself on the prairies and deserts to his glory days of stagecoach robberies, true love, and near execution at the hands of the law. KILLER performances from Astin, Pamela Austin (as his love interest), Dick Shawn as Marshall Bing Bell (Who's at the door?), Dom DeLuise, Mickey Rooney, Pat Morita, Henry Gibson and many, many, more make this movie fun to watch time and time again for the whole family.
