Crucial Viewing Depicting The Spread of Infectious Diseases!
Strikingly real and unfortunately timeless. Steven Soderbergh’s paranoia thriller Contagion (2011) has aged remarkably well into a masterful warning in the form of a phenomenal film displaying Soderbergh’s directorial prowess. Contagion is like an infectious disease spreading the world as the globe revisits this forgotten masterpiece in view of the deadly Coronavirus spreading across the planet. Contagion starts off with an ominous cough that foreshadows the increasing fear you are about to experience. Soderbergh’s direction is so fearless, focused, and gripping that you feel like Contagion is just depicting a real outbreak manifests, how our government would respond, and how the general population would react to that response. Contagion is ever scarier as we live in uncertain times of ... Strikingly real and unfortunately timeless. Steven Soderbergh’s paranoia thriller Contagion (2011) has aged remarkably well into a masterful warning in the form of a phenomenal film displaying Soderbergh’s directorial prowess. Contagion is like an infectious disease spreading the world as the globe revisits this forgotten masterpiece in view of the deadly Coronavirus spreading across the planet. Contagion starts off with an ominous cough that foreshadows the increasing fear you are about to experience. Soderbergh’s direction is so fearless, focused, and gripping that you feel like Contagion is just depicting a real outbreak manifests, how our government would respond, and how the general population would react to that response. Contagion is ever scarier as we live in uncertain times of nebulous global health for a new infectious disease could kill untold millions at any moment. Steven Soderbergh’s direction is beyond comparison in his pulse pounding pace and captivating imagery. I will say you will like Contagion if you are a fan of David Fincher’s Zodiac or Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty. Epic dramas that unfold into intricate plots about discovery and interaction have never looked so good. Every word is biting or shocking. Scott Z. Burns’ script is written like Contagion is the most important film ever made, and what’s so intriguing is that it very well could be. Humanity’s survival depends on our competency and preparedness for such a health calamity. Contagion is executed well in every scene, but two sequences stick out in my mind as peerless visual storytelling. First, Soderbergh takes you step by step in how a virus can spread across a population from person to person by way of hands contacting, public transportation, and food being contaminated. Secondly, he cleverly closes Contagion with this sequence’s counterpart by showing the audience how a disease can start from a single bat to pigs, then onto humans. Stephen Mirrione’s editing is so crisp and jolting that you cannot look away from the screen for a second. He makes Contagion’s 106 minute long run-time feel like 20, honestly. Furthermore, Steven Soderbergh shot Contagion himself as he was the cinematographer and I must say he is talented. Every shot of hands, eyes, or mouths is like looking down the barrel of a gun before it’s fired. The disease could spread from any contact and Soderbergh plays with the audience’s fears with a cold pursuit to thrill and unsettle the viewer. You will be uncomfortable and germ conscious by the end of Contagion. Contagion is chilling, but ultimately gripping entertainment of profound consequence if Soderbergh’s omens are abided. In regards to the acting, Contagion features an unreal cast of all stars ready to give you their best. Matt Damon is fantastic as a husband and father trying to protect his daughter, grieve for his wife and son, all while trying to make sense of the madness overtaking everyone around him. Damon delivers a quiet and realistic lead performance with authenticity and care. You can tell he worships and respects Soderbergh and Damon always gives him his most astute performances. Damon is equally good in Soderbergh’s paranoia thriller Unsane with Claire Foy. Similarly, Gwyneth Paltrow gives a fantastic cameo role as Damon’s wife. Her display of sickness is ghastly and her performance showing a seizure is shocking. It looks real. I loved Kate Winslet in Contagion and I’ll go on record saying that Contagion is her best role. She plays a scientist that cares about trying to find a cure for the virus. Her graceful performance is full of curiosity, courage, and compassion. Marion Cotillard is excellent as a WHO representative sent to China. Her performance is brave and realistic as well. Likewise, Jennifer Ehle is powerful as a dedicated scientist desperately researching for a vaccine to neutralize the virus. Her clever and sympathetic performance is poignant and all her own. Laurence Fishburne is compelling and empathetic as the head of the CDC, who is doing his best to quell fears and end the contagion. It’s very neat of Soderbergh to show Fishburne’s character’s perspective as a lens into the government’s side of thinking. Elliott Gould returns as a regular to Soderbergh’s movies with a hilarious role as a snarky scientist, who is also a brave mind key to solving the pathogen problem. Bryan Cranston is commanding as a respectable military leader aiding Fishburne’s medical quest for a cure. On the other hand, Jude Law is perfect as a lecherous and self-righteous blogger hellbent on profiteering off of the deaths of the infected. His role as a prophet of the plague is an interesting commentary on how the media criticizes the federal government’s actions during a crisis, while lining their own pockets at the expense of the public. He’s funny and loathsome.
