Product Information

"The first satisfying end-of-the-world novel in years . . . an ultimate one . . . massively entertaining."-- Cleveland Plain-Dealer The gigantic comet had slammed into Earth, forging earthquakes a thousand times too powerful to measure on the Richter scale, tidal waves thousands of feet high. Cities were turned into oceans; oceans turned into steam. It was the beginning of a new Ice Age and the end of civilization. But for the terrified men and women chance had saved, it was also the dawn of a new struggle for survival--a struggle more dangerous and challenging than any they had ever known. . . . "Take your earthquakes, waterlogged condominiums, swarms of bugs, colliding airplanes and flaming what-nots, wrap them up and they wouldn't match one page of Lucifer's Hammer for sweaty-palmed suspense."-- Chicago Daily News

  • Why should we think about survival?

I loved this book, when I read it 20 years ago, and all the times I've read it in between then and now. I've seen native people in different parts of the world living what we call "Primitive", lifestyles, natural shelters with dirt floors, the only water was what they carried from the stream, carried with hand made pots, the only food was what they caught or grew. I consider those people survivors. Most people in what we know as "Civilized society", have no clue how to survive in the event of a cataclysmic event that has world wide disastrous effects such as a massive comet strike to the earths surface. Read this book several times and you will always wonder if you could make it. A comet strike is a fact of life waiting to happen, it just hasn't gotten to us yet, they have hit earth ...

  • AN EXCELLENT SYFI BOOK

ONE OF MY FAVORITE SCIENCE FICTION BOOKS, VERY DIFFERENT FROM MOST OTHER SYFI. A VERY COMPELLING STORY LINE. ONE OF THOSE GREAT READS YOU HATE TO SEE COME TO AN END.

  • Lucifer's Hammer - Way ahead of it's time

Long before scientists began looking at the possibility of a comet ending all life on Earth, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle got together and wrote, in my opinion, the best "End of the World" story ever written. With much detail Niven and Pournelle tell how Lucifer's Hammer (A comet) hits the earth creating the ultimate disaster for mankind. Millions are killed in the initial impact, and those who are spared face the ultimate challenge of surviving the end of life as we know it. I first read this book when it was released in 1977, I recently picked up the book again and was struck by how far ahead of their time Niven and Pournelle were when they wrote this story. The attention to detail in the lives of the books stars is outstanding and the attachment you form to the survivors only make ...

  • As i recall, a very good story read years ago. About time for a re-read.

Good story. I read the book years ago & remember it was great but i've forgotten a lot. After watching well enjoyed movie "The Postman" w/ Kevin Costner i seemed to remember that the postman played an important part in this story of holding things together. Time to read this one again.

  • Lucifer's Hammer End of Civilization Novel

I consider this the most well written work of fiction/post-apocalyptic science fiction and my very favorite catastrophic Earth changing calamity in any published media. By Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, first published in 1977. It was nominated for the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1978. Well researched and difficult to put down, full of clearly written technical info, with very little chaff. Several sub-plots are well knitted together in one heck of a must read book. Have read it several times and highly recommend it. In my opinion, even better that "On the Beach" by Nevil Shute. I have to wonder why no one has made it into a film...A very good read & an excellent story. One of those books wherein, while reading, one estimates the remaining pages with increasing apprehension that it ...
