Building upon 2002's Deadly Alliance, the series' well-received leap to the 128-bit 3D arena, Mortal Kombat: Deception demonstrates the same depth in design and focus on the home console experience. The game offers five main modes of play, some of which will be familiar to fans of Deadly Alliance. The arcade-style Kombat mode has players fighting their way up a ladder of matches against increasingly difficult opponents, and Konquest leads them through role-playing-styled character development in a storylined adventure full of fights and other events.<br><br>Also available are Kombat Chess, which lets players choose a team of fighters and challenges them to select matches strategically, and Puzzle Kombat, a color-matching action puzzle reminiscent of Capcom's Super Puzzle Fighter, featuring cute, anime-styled versions of the game's otherwise dark and daunting kombatants. Mortal Kombat: Deception is also one of the first 3D fighting games to offer an online multiplayer mode. Broadband-connected gamers with the PlayStation 2 Network Adaptor can simply log on to find a match against a human opponent.<br><br>There are a dozen Mortal Kombat fighters selectable at the start of the game, including both old favorites and mysterious newcomers. Longtime fans of the series will recognize veterans of the earliest Mortal Kombat games, such as Sub-Zero and Scorpion, Kabal, Baraka, Mileena, Ermac, and Nightwolf, who are joined by relative newcomers like Bo'Rai Cho, who debuted in Deadly Alliance. Deception also introduces four new fighters, Ashrah, Dairou, Darrius, and Kobra, each with a distinctly new fighting style intended to balance the deadly abilities of the other characters. At least a dozen more characters can be unlocked through the course of the game, by spending "Koins" to open the correct "koffins" in the "Krypt," or by completing certain key challenges in the Konquest adventure mode.<br><br>In addition to its character selection, Mortal Kombat: Deception draws on the series' storied roots in other ways; development of the game was led by Ed Boon, co-creator of the original Mortal Kombat. Although Deception's fighting mechanics are also based on those of Deadly Alliance, a number of enhancements, adjustments, and embellishments have been made. In some instances, the gameplay may have a slightly more intense, exaggerated feel that rewards those who master the complex combo system. Characters can still take different stances, however, and can choose to fight unarmed or with a weapon.<br><br>Deception features "Fight State Indicators" on the ends of the characters' health bars that make it a little easier for players to anticipate particular dangers and time their special attacks. While it may seem these indicators would take the challenge down a notch, their addition is actually quite opportune, since Deception also adds a diverse selection of interactive arenas, many with instant-kill "death trap" elements, as well as two fatalities for each and every character -- answering the most common complaints that fans had of Deadly Alliance.

    Great MK Game!

    The Mortal Kombat series has always been a phenomenon. There are legions of dedicated fans out there that absolutely love it, and even more that can&apos;t stand it. But more often than not, it seems to boil down to the one simple argument: Are you a Street Fighter guy or a Mortal Kombat guy? Yet despite the fact that I, myself, have always been a Ryu and Ken supporter, the last couple of fighters from Midway have really gotten my attention. Especially this one: which is so huge and intimidating, that it will take even the most dedicated franchise fans out there quite some time to vanquish. But don&apos;t be misled by the overly positive score above. As despite the fact that I enjoyed the game thoroughly, was impressed by its replayablity and its depth, and felt that it has the best ...

    New era MK game done right.

    I was always a big mortal kombat fan, grew up with From MK1-3 I was always going to the game store renting those. IStopped after that mainly because I didn&apos;t have an N64 or PS until later. I tried MK 4 earlier this year and can say I was not at all impressed, the gameply was just a total letdown. Anyways I decided to invest in MK Deception and must say, IT is a great game!! It has different modes, you can do puzzle kombat, or Kombat chess. as for the Kombat it&apos;s pretty fluid and the characters look badass. When you first get the game, half the characters are locked so you have to play &apos;konquest&apos; mode to unlock the rest of them. This is a minor annoyance, conquest mode isn&apos;t too bad and you can also unlock the old school costumes if you can find them.

    TEST YOUR MIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I HAVE BEEN AN MK FAN SINCE MIDWAY FIRST INTRODUCED THIS SERIES ON THE NOW RETRO GAMES OF THE 90'S. I CANT SAY I LOVE THIS GAME ANY MORE OR LESS THAN ANY OTHERS IN THE SERIES BUT I DO KNOW I LOVE IT. I HAVE HAD MANY MK GAMES IN THE PAST AND STILL DO BUT OVER TIME I TRADED OR SOLD A FEW. THIS BEING ONE OF THEM. SO I RECENTLY MADE A DECISION TO HUNT DOWN AND FING THE MISSING PEICES TO THE MK PUZZLE. BELIEVE IT OR NOT DECEPTION WAS ONE OF THE GAMES I MISSED. SO REGARDLESS OF IT BEING AN OLDER GAME IT WAS NEW TO ME AND THATS ONE OF THE REASONS I BOUGHT IT. I LOVED THE FACT THAT IT PICKED OFF RIGHT WERE THE PREVIOUS GAME HAD ENDED. THE GRAPHICS SURPRISED ME AS WELL. TO ME A STORY LINE IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE GAMING EXPERIENCE AND MK DECEPTION HAS A GREAT ONE. I CANT HELP BUT "LEARN" ...

    FINISH HIM! great game

    i first played it on the gamecube, was a mortal kombat since the game came out but as i was young i wasnt allowed to play it due to the "gore" or violence of a video game. now i have them all lol very underrated game for its time and fun

    Game was pretty good over all....

    Over all I thought the game was great! I would give it hands down two thums up! I really like going on the konquest adventures and also discovering new worlds. The minor thing I don't like about the game is when you think you finish the game, your not done. I decided to buy the game over all because I have started a collection of vedio games for mortal kombat.Plus, too I don't have too many vedio games to start out with..
