Great debut album from an under-rated band
I bought a nice used copy of this album on vinyl when I was much younger, at the time it was somewhat of a rarity. I had sought it out because I was into the Grateful Dead, and liked the song "Supplication", which I had seen them perform live. After my initial listen, I found I really liked the songs and played it quite often. Kingfish was already a solid performing band when Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead started sitting in. When the Grateful Dead took their hiatus from touring in late 1974 till early 1976, Bob Weir joined Kingfish full time and this album was born. Being the first, this is the album that put them on the map, and it also contains many of their best songs. Lazy Lightning/Supplication worked it's way into the Grateful Dead's song rotation for quite a few years. Asia Minor, ... The vocals are shared mostly between Bob Weir and David Torbet, with Matthew Kelly contributing as well. Dave Torbet was fairly well known at the time for being the bass player and a contributing vocalist for New Riders Of The Purple Sage. He left the New Riders and joined Kingfish in 1974 and played with them till his untimely death in 1983. I saw them in the late 80's without Dave Torbert or Bob Weir, and they still put on an amazing performance. They were like the worlds greatest blues rockin' bar band, Matthew Kelly's fantastic harp playing, Robbie Hoddinott tearing up the guitar solos, great stuff. If you want to check out this band, this CD is probably the best place to start. If you like what you hear, try the King Biscut Live at The Beacon CD, the Trident album/CD, or one of the Relix Records CD's.
