Product Information

Originally written and directed by filmmaker John Waters in 1988, and then put on Broadway, the camp musical HAIRSPRAY could easily have run its course with viewers. But thanks to playful direction, flashy costumes, over-the-top performances, and a positive message of peace, this newest spin proves to be yet another enjoyable incarnation. Set in 1960s Baltimore, the story follows a plump young girl named Tracy Turnblad (played by impressive newcomer Nikki Blonski) on an amazing journey as her dream of dancing on the popular Corny Collins Show becomes a reality. The local television program is a shiny spectacle spear-headed by Corny Collins (James Marsden), a gang of young dancers, and producer Velma Von Tussle (Michelle Pfeiffer), a seductress ice queen whose manipulative ways ensure her daughter Amber (Brittany Snow) gets more than her fair share of screen time as one of the show's stars. When Tracy shows up at an open call, Velma can barely contain her rage, and sets out to rid the show of Tracy and the talented black dancers who make up the show's popular "Negro Day." Thus begins a war of talent and a battle for justice, with those in favor of integration meeting many obstacles along the way.While less out-there than Waters's original, the film still contains some very quirky humor. John Travolta playing Tracy's overweight mother may seem an odd concept at first, but in this context it works. Scenes that would ordinarily be cheesy are made more interesting due to the odd dynamic between Christopher Walken and John Travolta playing man and wife. As the two dance and woo one another, the strange smile on Travolta's lipsticked lips and the grace of Walken's dancing will be sure to fascinate viewers. Viewers should also watch for cameos by Ricki Lake, and by John Waters as a Baltimore streaker. With all the wacky comedy, it's often easy to forget that the meat of HAIRSPRAY is a battle over racial integration. The film manages to create some touching moments in the midst of sparkling musical numbers.

Hairspray Remake Makes The Connection With My Daughter
Just when I thought I'd never see a really cute movie again, along came the second remake of the 1988 film Hairspray, originally directed by none other than John Waters. You've got to remember the old one to really appreciate this one even though the first one had some really big stars such as Sonny Bono & Deborah Harry as the parents. We have to go back in time to the year 1962 again and pick up where the teenager Tracy Turnblad and her friend Penny Pingleton are watching the Corny Collins show and dreaming of how they could really fit into that scene. Tracy gets a chance to dance on the show and the rest is history. Her dancing skills attract Corny Collins, but also the attention of teenage heart throb, Link Larkin. But not everyone is happy with the decision to have her dance on the ... Although we faced various racial issues back then, we start to believe that integration may just as well be the way of the future after all if everyone would just all get along together. We also are face with having to realize that all our petty prejudices about looks, race, and body size are really so unimportant and immature that we should have these sorts of feeling towards one another. Thanks John Waters for making the second film possible and flashing us in your cameo as well. I give this a 4/5 because it's fun to watch and very cute. Set in the racially divided Baltimore of 1962, the film suggests the closest a black teenager could get to cultural integration was "Negro Day" on The Corny Collins Show. It's all up to Tracy Turnblad to end segregation. Hairspray earns knockout status for humor, heart and high spirits. As Tracy, Nikki Blonsky is awesome! Not only does she storm the barricades against race and flab by TV station manager Velma Von Tussle (Michelle Pfeiffer), Tracy is determined to dance on TV with Linc Larkin (Zac Efron), even though Amber (Brittany Snow), Velma's daughter, has her initials on Linc. Seaweed's mom(Queen Latifah) won't stand in the way of teen romance. Travolta gives Edna a sweetness, he plays her for real. And when Edna finally leaves her apartment after years of self-exile, watch out! Christopher Walken excels as Edna's adoring husband, Wilbur. When he looks at his woman, it's with total love and adoration! Hairspray has a great beat, and you sure can dance to it! This is a great movie and I highly recommend seeing it!

Great Songs, Great Acting
Over all a very good movie with an excellent moral, good for all ages. Nikki Blonsky is incredible! Hard to believe this is her first movie. John Travolta in drag is hilarious. The costumes are excellent. As compared to the original (non-musical) version, this film drags a bit. Too many songs, although most of them are so catchy it would be hard to say which to drop. Songs like "You Can't Stop the Beat," "Welcome To The Sixties," "Good Morning Baltimore" and "I Can Hear The Bells" are definite keepers and set the tone for the show. They'll have you singing along even if you aren't a fan of Broadway tunes. I could do without "Miss Baltimore Crabs," but even this song clues you into a key character's personality, so it serves a purpose. Definitely a film you should see more than ... Hairspray (2007)
I LOVED IT!!! It's been a while since I had seen the original starring Ricky Lake, but I enjoyed that one as well. I liked the remake a little bit more just because the actors were more familiar to me Amanda Bynes, John Travolta etc. It's so colorful and fun and I honestly think anyone would like it. I think that this film is good for younger audiences to see as well because it can give them a little more insight on how American society used to be like before the Civil Rights Movement.I LOVED IT!!! It's been a while since I had seen the original starring Ricky Lake, but I enjoyed that one as well. Fun But Not Divine
This is a very good and fun remake. The songs are pitch perfect. Good Morning Baltimore anyone?? I had such a fondness for the original cast though. I have a tough time not trying to think about them. Mink Stole, Ricki Lake, Sunny Bono, and of course DIVINE!! I think this is a fun film. It has been made a little more tame than anything Waters would have ever done, but that's alright. It's solid and good fun, but I still recommend the original!This is a very good and fun remake.
