Often Funny, Somewhat Contrived, Self-Obsessed Essays
Augusten Burroughs "Possible Side Effects" is an often funny, obviously contrived compilation of self-obsessed essays. He recounts scenes from his dysfunctional childhood which he previously chronicled in "Running with Scissors," along with vignettes from various bad jobs, including his travails at an ad agency, and his life as a famous writer. Burroughs' theme throughout is himself: his struggles with alcoholism, his voracious Nicorette habit, his compulsive Web surfing, his slovenliness, his self-imposed social isolation, his unfitness for employment, his gross bodily emissions and his general embarrassment at being alive. The stories are too often paper-thin- a visit from the tooth fairy, a trip to the doctor, house-training a puppy- which suggests that Burroughs has mined his ... Augusten Burroughs "Possible Side Effects" is an often funny, obviously contrived compilation of self-obsessed essays. Burroughs center-of-the-universe story arc occasionally gets oppressive, but when he steps outside his head his perceptions are refreshing and humorous. "Possible Side Effects" is clearly a retread the his best-selling "Running with Scissors" and "Dry." The quality of these "new" essays varies tremendously. Burroughs' humorist talent quells some of the reader's disappointment, but it might be prudent for him to change his shtick.

Another Winner
Augusten Brown is an author that stays ongoingly funny, creative, and captivating. ALL of his books are just super. I've also enjoyed the CD versions of Running With Scissors, Magical Thinking, and now Possible Side Effects. I commute an hour to work every day. Augusten's story telling and oh-so-colorful memoirs have kept me wonderful company many, many times. Whether it by poop samples on the picnic table, or a less than fun grandmother he sets straight with the perfectly appropriate name calling, Augusten's voice and stories just never get old. Thanks Augusten, PLEASE keep crakin' 'em out... Augusten also has a web site and periodic news flyers. Yes...I'm a real fan. I would say I'm his #1 fan but don't want to make him shudder with Kathy Bates and visions of "the hobbler". ... Augusten Brown is an author that stays ongoingly funny, creative, and captivating. Funny and Poignant Portrait of Recovering Alcoholic
This is the fourth book of Augusten Burrough's memoirs. The preceding book, "Running with Scissors", has just been made into a movie, so people are becoming hip to his particular brand of humor and pathos. He leads an interesting life as a gay man and as a recovering alcoholic. I find his books to be sad, funny, and illuminating. This book is particularly difficult to put down. It is a best seller and deserves that recognition. Highly recommended!This is the fourth book of Augusten Burrough's memoirs. Not what I expected
After reading "Running With Scissors", I got the other books by Burroughs...First up, "Possible Side Effects"...Not so good. Just a book of short stories that I guess is mildly amusing at times, but it seems that he was desperate to get another book out, and put this out. He can be funny, but its just the same over and over. Worth reading, but go to the library and get it, save the cash..
